Māsu kujjha bhūmipati, māsu kujjha rathesabha;
O king, lord of the earth, do not be angry. O king, bull among charioteers, do not be angry.
“Thưa chúa tể mặt đất, xin đừng nổi giận; thưa vua xe, xin đừng nổi giận;

Kuddhaṃ appaṭikujjhanto, rājā raṭṭhassa pūjito.
A king who does not get angry in return at one who is angry is honored by the realm.
Vua không nổi giận lại với kẻ nổi giận thì được dân chúng trong nước tôn kính.”

Gāme vā yadi vāraññe, ninne vā yadi vā thale;
Whether in a village or in the forest, whether in a low place or on high ground,
“Dù ở làng hay rừng, ở chỗ trũng hay chỗ cao;

Sabbattha anusāsāmi, māsu kujjha* rathesabha.
I instruct you everywhere: O king, bull among charioteers, do not be angry.
Ở khắp mọi nơi, tôi khuyên ngài: thưa vua xe, xin đừng nổi giận.”

Avāriyapitā nāma, ahu gaṅgāya nāviko;
There was a ferryman named Avāriya’s father on the Gaṅgā.
Có một người lái đò tên là Avāriyapitā trên sông Hằng;

Pubbe janaṃ tāretvāna, pacchā yācati vetanaṃ;
He would ferry people across first, and then ask for his fare afterwards.
Trước tiên đưa người qua sông, sau đó mới đòi tiền công;

Tenassa bhaṇḍanaṃ hoti, na ca bhogehi vaḍḍhati.
Because of this, disputes arose for him, and he did not prosper in his wealth.
Vì thế mà sinh ra cãi vã, và tài sản cũng chẳng tăng trưởng.

Atiṇṇaṃyeva yācassu, apāraṃ tāta nāvika;
O son, ferryman, ask for the fare from those who have not yet crossed, while they are still on this side.
Này người lái đò, con ơi, hãy đòi tiền khi họ chưa qua sông;

Añño hi tiṇṇassa mano, añño hoti pāresino* .
For the mind of one who has crossed is different; the mind of one who wishes to cross is different.
Vì tâm trí của người đã qua sông khác, tâm trí của người muốn qua sông cũng khác.

Yāyevānusāsaniyā, rājā gāmavaraṃ adā;
By the very instruction by which the king gave him an excellent village,
Chính nhờ lời khuyên ấy, nhà vua đã ban cho một ngôi làng quý báu;

Tāyevānusāsaniyā, nāviko paharī mukhaṃ.
By that very instruction, the ferryman struck him in the face.
Cũng chính vì lời khuyên ấy, người lái đò đã đánh vào mặt.

Bhattaṃ bhinnaṃ hatā bhariyā, gabbho ca patito chamā;
The meal was broken, the wife was beaten, and the fetus fell to the ground.
Bát cơm vỡ, vợ bị đánh, thai nhi rơi xuống đất;

Migova jātarūpena, na tenatthaṃ abandhi sūti* .
Like a deer with gold, he gained no benefit from it.
Như con nai giẫm lên vàng bạc, chẳng vì thế mà tăng trưởng lợi ích.
