960. Foolish monks will defile this well-taught Dhamma by means of craving, wrong views, and misconduct.

Some will wear the white banner of sectarians.

With a wandering mind, without purity, he is not worthy of the kaṣāya robe.

973. The great, terrible, and inconceivable reflection of the Nāga (Bodhisatta in the form of Chaddanta elephant) once occurred.

974. Indeed, at that time, the Chaddanta elephant, having seen that saffron robe, the banner of the Noble Ones, which the hunter wore, spoke these verses conducive to welfare.

“Bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs, with corrupted minds and disrespect;

Tādīnaṃ mettacittānaṃ, niggaṇhissantyanāgate.

Will oppress those steadfast ones who have minds of loving-kindness in the future.

975. Whatever person, being impure (unpurified by defilements like passion, hatred, and delusion) and devoid of self-restraint and truthfulness, wears the saffron robe, that person is unworthy of the saffron robe.

“Even when taught by the elders concerning the wearing of robes, the foolish ones;

Those ignorant ones, openly engaging in desires, will not listen.

Will not heed their upajjhāyas, like a wild horse to its charioteer.

With a partially filled stomach, moderate in food, mindful, a bhikkhu should wander.
