Here, an uninstructed ordinary person, who has not seen the noble ones, is unskilled in the Dhamma of the noble ones, and undisciplined in the Dhamma of the noble ones; who has not seen admirable people, is unskilled in the Dhamma of admirable people, and undisciplined in the Dhamma of admirable people—regards form as self, or self as possessing form, or form as in self, or self as in form.

Regard feeling…perception…volitional formations…consciousness as self, or self as possessing consciousness, or consciousness as in self, or self as in consciousness.

Such a view, a mode of view…a perverted grasping—this is called "identity view."

One doubts, is perplexed about the Teacher; doubts, is perplexed about the Dhamma; doubts, is perplexed about the Saṅgha; doubts, is perplexed about the training; doubts, is perplexed about the past; doubts, is perplexed about the future; doubts, is perplexed about the past and future; doubts, is perplexed about conditionality and dependently arisen phenomena.

Such wavering, perplexity, being perplexed, being stiff, a mental defilement of the mind—this is called "doubt."

"Purity is through morality, purity is through observances, purity is through morality and observances, for ascetics and brahmins outside this teaching"—such a view, a mode of view…a perverted grasping—this is called "clinging to rules and and observances."

“Ngoài giáo pháp này, có sự thanh tịnh nhờ giới, sự thanh tịnh nhờ cấm, sự thanh tịnh nhờ giới và cấm của các Sa-môn, Bà-la-môn”—loại tà kiến, quan điểm sai lầm…pe… sự chấp thủ sai lầm như vậy—đây được gọi là “sīlabbataparāmāsa” (giới cấm thủ).

Here, an uninstructed ordinary person, who is not a seer of the noble ones, not skilled in the Dhamma of the noble ones, not trained in the Dhamma of the noble ones; who is not a seer of the true persons, not skilled in the Dhamma of the true persons, not trained in the Dhamma of the true persons—regards form as self, or self as possessing form, or form as in self, or self as in form.

He regards feeling... perception... volitional formations... consciousness as self, or self as possessing consciousness, or consciousness as in self, or self as in consciousness.

Quán thọ… (v.v.)… tưởng… (v.v.)… các hành… (v.v.)… thức là tự ngã, hoặc tự ngã có thức, hoặc thức ở trong tự ngã, hoặc tự ngã ở trong thức.

One is not free from lust, not free from desire, not free from affection, not free from thirst, not free from feverish longing, not free from craving for sensual pleasures; one is not free from lust for the body; one is not free from lust for forms; having eaten one’s fill, one dwells devoted to the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of reclining, the pleasure of sleepiness; one lives the holy life aspiring to a certain divine realm, thinking: “By this virtue, or observance, or ascetic practice, or holy life, I shall become a deity, or one of the deities” – these are the five fetterings of the mind.

Some declare that "the self is percipient and healthy after death"; some declare that "the self is non-percipient and healthy after death"; some declare that "the self is neither percipient nor non-percipient and healthy after death"; or some proclaim the annihilation, destruction, and disappearance of a being that is mindful; or some declare Nibbāna in this very life – these are the five views.
