Sabbosadhadharaṇidhare nekapupphamālyavitate gaja-gavaja mahiṃsa-ruru-camara-pasada-khagga-gokaṇṇa-sīha-byaggha-dīpi-accha-koka-taraccha-uddāra-kadalimiga- biḷāra-sasa-kaṇṇikānucariteākiṇṇanelamaṇḍalamahāvarāhanāgakulakareṇu^* -saṅghādhivuṭṭhe^* issamiga- sākhamiga-sarabhamiga-eṇīmiga-vātamiga-pasadamiga-purisālu^* -kimpurisa-yakkha-rakkhasanisevite amajjavamañjarīdhara-pahaṭṭha^* -pupphaphusitaggā^* nekapādapagaṇavitatekurara-cakora-vāraṇa-mayūra-parabhata- jīvañjīvaka-celāvakā-bhiṅkāra-karavīkamattavihaṅgagaṇa-satata^* sampaghuṭṭheañjana-manosilā-haritāla- hiṅgulakahema-rajatakanakānekadhātusatavinaddhapaṭimaṇḍitappadese evarūpe khalu, bho, ramme vanasaṇḍe kuṇālo nāma sakuṇo paṭivasati ativiya citto ativiya cittapattacchadano.

In such a pleasant forest grove, O sirs, a bird named Kuṇāla dwells, exceedingly beautiful, with exceedingly beautiful wings and plumage, in a land adorned with many kinds of minerals—antimony, realgar, orpiment, cinnabar, gold, silver, and various other metals—a land covered with all sorts of medicinal herbs, adorned with many flowers and garlands, frequented by elephants, wild oxen, buffaloes, ruru deer, chamois, antelopes, rhinoceroses, gokaṇṇa deer, lions, tigers, leopards, bears, wolves, hyenas, wild boars, kadali deer, cats, hares, and deer with prominent ears, where numerous great wild boars and herds of female elephants roam, inhabited by issa deer, sākhamiga deer, sarabha deer, eṇīmiga deer, vātamiga deer, pasada deer, purisālu, kimpurisas, yakkhas, and rakkhasas, covered with many trees bearing clusters of unripened fruit and with blooming, flower-laden branches, resounding constantly with flocks of excited birds such as ospreys, chakor partridges, herons, peacocks, cuckoos, jīvañjīvaka birds, celāvakā birds, bhiṅkāras, and karavīka birds.

Indeed, O sirs, this Kuṇāla bird had five hundred and fifty female bird attendants.

Này chư vị, chim Kuṇāla ấy có năm ngàn rưỡi chim cái làm thị nữ.

Atha khalu, bho, dve dijakaññāyo kaṭṭhaṃ mukhena ḍaṃsitvā^* taṃ kuṇālaṃ sakuṇaṃ majjhe nisīdāpetvā uḍḍenti^* – ‘‘mā naṃ kuṇālaṃ sakuṇaṃ addhānapariyāyapathe kilamatho ubbāhetthā’’ti^* .

Then, O sirs, two female birds, holding a stick in their beaks, placed that Kuṇāla bird in the middle and flew, thinking: “May weariness not overcome that Kuṇāla bird on the journey.”

Này chư vị, hai chim cái ngậm một cành cây bằng miệng, đặt chim Kuṇāla ở giữa và bay đi – “để chim Kuṇāla không bị mệt mỏi trên đường đi.”

Pañcasatā^* dijakaññāyo heṭṭhato heṭṭhato uḍḍenti –^* ‘‘sacāyaṃ kuṇālo sakuṇo āsanā paripatissati, mayaṃ taṃ pakkhehi paṭiggahessāmāti.

Five hundred female birds flew below, thinking: “If this Kuṇāla bird falls from its perch, we will catch it with our wings.”

Five hundred female birds flew above, thinking: “May the sun's heat not torment that Kuṇāla bird.”

Pañcasatā pañcasatā^* dijakaññāyo ubhatopassena uḍḍenti –^* ‘‘mā naṃ kuṇālaṃ sakuṇaṃ sītaṃ vā uṇhaṃ vā tiṇaṃ vā rajo vā vāto vā ussāvo vā upapphusī’’ti.

Five hundred female birds flew on both sides, thinking: “May cold or heat, grass or dust, wind or dew not touch that Kuṇāla bird.”

Pañcasatā dijakaññāyo purato purato uḍḍenti – ‘‘mā naṃ kuṇālaṃ sakuṇaṃ gopālakā vā pasupālakā vā tiṇahārakā vā kaṭṭhahārakā vā vanakammikā vā kaṭṭhena vā kaṭhalena vā^* pāṇinā vā ( )^* leḍḍunā vā daṇḍena vā satthena vā sakkharāhi vā^* pahāraṃ adaṃsu.

Five hundred bird-maidens fly ahead, ahead, lest cowherds, or herdsmen, or grass-gatherers, or wood-gatherers, or forest workers strike that Kuṇāla bird with wood, or a potsherd, or their hand, or a clod, or a stick, or a weapon, or gravel.

Lest this Kuṇāla bird engage in conflict with bushes, or creepers, or trees, or branches, or trunks, or rocks, or powerful birds.

Pañcasatā dijakaññāyo pacchato pacchato uḍḍenti saṇhāhi sakhilāhi mañjūhi madhurāhi vācāhi samudācarantiyo – ‘‘māyaṃ kuṇālo sakuṇo āsane pariyukkaṇṭhī’’ti.

Five hundred bird-maidens fly behind, behind, addressing him with soft, gentle, charming, and sweet voices, "Lest this Kuṇāla bird become weary in his seat."

Five hundred bird-maidens fly in all directions, bringing various kinds of fruits from many trees, "Lest this Kuṇāla bird suffer from hunger."

Then, good sirs, those bird-maidens quickly bring that Kuṇāla bird from park to park, from pleasure garden to pleasure garden, from river ford to river ford, from mountain peak to mountain peak, from mango grove to mango grove, from rose-apple grove to rose-apple grove, from breadfruit grove to breadfruit grove, from coconut plantation to coconut plantation, for his delight.

Atha khalu, bho, kuṇālo sakuṇo tāhi dijakaññāhi divasaṃ paribyūḷho evaṃ apasādeti – ‘‘nassatha tumhe vasaliyo, vinassatha tumhe vasaliyo, coriyo dhuttiyo asatiyo lahucittāyo katassa appaṭikārikāyo anilo viya yenakāmaṃgamāyo’’ti.

Then, good sirs, the Kuṇāla bird, surrounded by those bird-maidens all day, thus disparages them: "Perish, you low-caste women! Be ruined, you low-caste women! You are thieves, rogues, unchaste, fickle-minded, ungrateful for what is done, going wherever you please like the wind!"

In the eastern part of that very King of Mountains, Himavā, are extremely delicate and exquisitely beautiful mountain springs, flowing with green water.

In regions adorned with fragrant, delightful, and blooming lotus varieties: blue lotus, white lotus, white water lily, red lotus, hundred-petaled lotus, fragrant water lily, and mandālaka flowers.

In a dense thicket of kuravaka, mucalinda, ketaka, vedisa, vañjula, punnāga, bakula, tilaka, piyaka, hasanasāla, saḷala, campaka, asoka, nāga trees, tirīṭi, bhujapatta, lodda, sandalwood, aloeswood, padmaka, piyaṅgu, devadāru, and cocagahana trees; kakudha, kuṭaja, aṅkola, kaccikāra, kaṇikāra, kaṇṇikāra, kanavera, koraṇḍaka, koviḷāra, kiṃsuka, yodhika, forest jasmine, manaṅgaṇa, manavajja, bhaṇḍi, surucira, bhagini, mālāmalyadhara, jāti, sumana, madhugandhika, dhanutakkāri, tālīsa, tagara, musīra, koṭṭha, and kacchavita trees; in a region adorned with spreading vines of fully bloomed atimuttaka flowers; resounding with geese, plovers, kādamba, and kāraṇḍava birds; inhabited by Vidyādharas, Siddhas, ascetics, and hermits; frequented by excellent devas, yakkhas, rakkhasas, dānavas, gandhabbas, kinnaras, and mahoragas—in such a charming forest grove, good sirs, dwells a cuckoo named Puṇṇamukha, with an exceedingly sweet voice, alluring eyes, and intoxicated gaze.

Then indeed, sirs, two bird-maidens, biting a stick with their mouths, made that Full-mouth Cuckoo sit in the middle and flew, thinking: "Let not that Full-mouth Cuckoo be overcome by weariness on the long journey."

Fifty bird-maidens flew underneath, thinking: "If this Full-mouth Cuckoo falls from his seat, we will catch him with our wings."

Fifty bird-maidens flew in front, thinking: "Let not cowherds or herdsmen, grass-gatherers or wood-gatherers, or forest workers strike that Full-mouth Cuckoo with a stick, a clod, a hand, a lump of earth, a staff, a knife, or pebbles.

Atha khalu, bho, puṇṇamukho phussakokilo tāhi dijakaññāhi divasaṃ paribyūḷho evaṃ pasaṃsati – ‘‘sādhu, sādhu, bhaginiyo, etaṃ kho, bhaginiyo, tumhākaṃ patirūpaṃ kuladhītānaṃ, yaṃ tumhe bhattāraṃ paricareyyāthā’’ti.

Then indeed, sirs, the Full-mouth Cuckoo, attended by those bird-maidens all day, praised them thus: "Excellent, excellent, sisters! This, sisters, is fitting for you, daughters of good families, that you should attend your husband."

Then indeed, sirs, the Full-mouth Cuckoo approached the cuckoo Kuṇāla.

Addasaṃsu kho kuṇālassa sakuṇassa paricārikā dijakaññāyo taṃ puṇṇamukhaṃ phussakokilaṃ dūratova āgacchantaṃ; disvāna yena puṇṇamukho phussakokilo tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā taṃ puṇṇamukhaṃ phussakokilaṃ etadavocuṃ – ‘‘ayaṃ, samma puṇṇamukha, kuṇālo sakuṇo ativiya pharuso ativiya pharusavāco, appevanāma tavampi āgamma piyavācaṃ labheyyāmā’’ti.

The bird-maidens, Kuṇāla's attendants, saw that Full-mouth Cuckoo coming from afar; having seen him, they approached the Full-mouth Cuckoo; having approached, they said to the Full-mouth Cuckoo: "Friend Full-mouth, this cuckoo Kuṇāla is exceedingly harsh, exceedingly harsh-spoken; perhaps through your coming we might obtain gentle speech."

"Perhaps, sisters," he said, and then approached the cuckoo Kuṇāla; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the cuckoo Kuṇāla and sat down to one side.

Indeed, friend Kuṇāla, one should speak pleasantly even to women who speak unpleasantly, how much more so to those who speak pleasantly!"

Evaṃ vutte, kuṇālo sakuṇo taṃ puṇṇamukhaṃ phussakokilaṃ evaṃ apasādesi – ‘‘nassa tvaṃ, samma jamma vasala, vinassa tvaṃ, samma jamma vasala, ko nu tayā viyatto jāyājinenā’’ti.

When this was said, the cuckoo Kuṇāla thus rebuked the Full-mouth Cuckoo: "Begone, friend vile wretch! Perish, friend vile wretch! What is there in you, you who are conquered by your wife!"

And so, being rebuked, the Full-mouth Cuckoo turned back from that very spot.

Bāḷhā vedanā vattanti māraṇantikā^* .

Strong pains, leading to death, were present.

Atha khalu, bho, puṇṇamukhassa phussakokilassa paricārikānaṃ dijakaññānaṃ etadahosi – ‘‘ābādhiko kho ayaṃ puṇṇamukho phussakokilo, appevanāma imamhā ābādhā vuṭṭhaheyyā’’ti ekaṃ adutiyaṃ ohāya yena kuṇālo sakuṇo tenupasaṅkamiṃsu.

Now indeed, sirs, the female bird attendants of Puṇṇamukha, the cuckoo, thought: "This Puṇṇamukha, the cuckoo, is indeed ill; may he recover from this illness." So, leaving him alone, they approached Kuṇāla, the bird.

Addasā kho kuṇālo sakuṇo tā dijakaññāyo dūratova āgacchantiyo, disvāna tā dijakaññāyo etadavoca – ‘‘kahaṃ pana tumhaṃ vasaliyo bhattā’’ti?

Kuṇāla, the bird, saw those female birds approaching from afar, and seeing them, he said: "Where, you wretched women, is your master?"

Này các bạn, chim Kuṇāla đã thấy những cô chim cái ấy đến từ xa, sau khi thấy, nó đã nói với những cô chim cái ấy: – “Này những tiện tỳ, chồng của các ngươi ở đâu?”

‘‘Ābādhiko kho, samma kuṇāla, puṇṇamukho phussakokilo appevanāma tamhā ābādhā vuṭṭhaheyyā’’ti.

"Friend Kuṇāla, Puṇṇamukha, the cuckoo, is ill; may he recover from that illness."

Evaṃ vutte, kuṇālo sakuṇo tā dijakaññāyo evaṃ apasādesi – ‘‘nassatha tumhe vasaliyo, vinassatha tumhe vasaliyo, coriyo dhuttiyo asatiyo lahucittāyo katassa appaṭikārikāyo anilo viya yenakāmaṃgamāyo’’ti; vatvā yena puṇṇamukho phussakokilo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṃ puṇṇamukhaṃ phussakokilaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘haṃ, samma, puṇṇamukhā’’ti.

When this was said, Kuṇāla, the bird, thus rebuked those female birds: "Perish, you wretched women! Be destroyed, you wretched women! You are thieves, rogues, unchaste, fickle-minded, ungrateful for what has been done, going wherever you please like the wind!" Having said this, he approached Puṇṇamukha, the cuckoo; having approached, he said to Puṇṇamukha, the cuckoo: "Hey, friend Puṇṇamukha!"

Now indeed, sirs, Kuṇāla, the bird, took hold of Puṇṇamukha, the cuckoo, with his wings and beak, lifted him up, and made him drink various medicines.

"I have seen, friend Puṇṇamukha, a goddess named Kākvatī, dwelling in the middle of the ocean, the wife of Venateyya, commit evil with Naṭakuvera."

I have seen, friend Puṇṇamukha, a goddess named Kuruṅgadevī, with beautiful hair, desiring Prince Eḷika, commit evil with a disciple of Prince Chaḷaṅga.

“Like a thief, they are entangled; like liquor, they are tainted; like a merchant, they are skilled in words; like a deer’s horn, they turn about; like a snake, they have a forked tongue; like a pit, they are concealed; like the abyss, they are hard to fill; like a female ogre, they are hard to satisfy; like Yama, they are always taking away; like a fire, they consume all; like a river, they carry away all; like the wind, they move as they please; like Mount Meru, they are indiscriminate; like a poisonous tree, they are ever-bearing.”

“There are these four things, friend Puṇṇamukha, which, when a need arises, become unhelpful in a stranger’s house – a bull, a milch-cow, a vehicle, a wife.

Poverty, sickness, old age, addiction to liquor, foolishness, heedlessness, compliance in all matters, and providing all wealth – for these eight reasons, friend Puṇṇamukha, a woman despises her husband.

And she is accustomed to going to parks, accustomed to going to pleasure gardens, accustomed to going to river fords, accustomed to going to relatives' homes, accustomed to going to other families' homes, accustomed to devoting herself to adorning herself with mirrors and clothes, and she is a drinker of intoxicants, accustomed to peeking out, and accustomed to standing at the door—indeed, friend Puṇṇamukha, by these nine actions, a woman brings about corruption.

She stretches, she bends, she sports, she is shy, she rubs nail against nail, she steps on foot with foot, she scratches the ground with a stick, she lifts up a child or has it lifted up, she plays or has it played, she kisses or has it kissed, she eats or has it eaten, she gives, she begs, she imitates what is done, she speaks loudly, she speaks softly, she speaks indistinctly, she speaks distinctly, she laughs with dancing, singing, playing instruments, crying, sporting, adorning; she looks, she moves her hips, she moves her private parts, she reveals her thigh, she covers her thigh, she shows her breasts, she shows her armpit, she shows her navel, she winks her eye, she raises her eyebrow, she licks her lip, she lets out her tongue, she loosens her garment, she fastens her garment, she loosens her hair, she ties her hair—indeed, friend Puṇṇamukha, by these forty actions a woman misconducts herself with a man.

She praises her husband’s departure, she does not remember him when he is away, she does not rejoice when he returns, she speaks ill of him, she does not speak well of him, she acts for his disadvantage, she does not act for his advantage, she does what is not to be done for him, she does not do what is to be done for him, she sleeps covered up, she lies down with her back turned, she becomes restless and agitated, she sighs deeply, she feels pain, she frequently goes to urinate and defecate, she acts contrary, hearing the sound of another man, she opens and directs her ear, she becomes one whose wealth is ruined, she makes friends with neighbors, she becomes one whose feet are out, she becomes one who follows the streets and is unchaste, she is constantly disrespectful towards her husband and has corrupt intentions, she frequently stands at the door, she shows her armpits, limbs, and breasts, she goes in all directions and looks—indeed, friend Puṇṇamukha, by these twenty-five actions a woman should be known to be corrupted.
