31. Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

31. Thus have I heard: At one time the Blessed One was dwelling in Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park.

31. Tôi nghe như vầy: Một thời Thế Tôn trú tại Sāvatthī, trong khu vườn Jetavana của ông Anāthapiṇḍika.

Atha kho sambahulā satullapakāyikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu.

Then, a number of Satullapakāyikā devas, when the night was far advanced, with their surpassing beauty illuminating the entire Jeta’s Grove, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they stood to one side.

Rồi nhiều thiên nhân Satullapakāyika, với vẻ đẹp rực rỡ, chiếu sáng toàn bộ Jetavana, đến gần Thế Tôn; sau khi đến gần, họ đảnh lễ Thế Tôn và đứng sang một bên.

Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi –

One deva, standing to one side, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

Một vị thiên nhân đứng sang một bên, đã nói kệ này trước mặt Thế Tôn:

‘‘Sabbhireva samāsetha, sabbhi kubbetha^* santhavaṃ;

“One should associate only with good people, with good people one should form friendship;

“Chỉ nên kết giao với người hiền, chỉ nên làm bạn với người hiền;

Sataṃ saddhammamaññāya, seyyo hoti na pāpiyo’’ti.

knowing the Dhamma of the good, one becomes better, not worse.”

Hiểu rõ Chánh pháp của người hiền, sẽ trở nên tốt hơn, không xấu đi.”

Then another deva spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

knowing the Dhamma of the good, wisdom is gained, not from elsewhere.”

“One should associate only with good people, with good people one should form friendship;

Sataṃ saddhammamaññāya, sokamajjhe na socatī’’ti.

knowing the Dhamma of the good, one does not sorrow amidst sorrow.”

Hiểu rõ Chánh pháp của người hiền, giữa nỗi sầu không sầu muộn.”

Then another deva spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

“One should associate only with good people, with good people one should form friendship;

knowing the Dhamma of the good, one shines amidst relatives.”

Hiểu rõ Chánh pháp của người hiền, sẽ tỏa sáng giữa bà con.”

“One should associate only with good people, with good people one should form friendship;

Sataṃ saddhammamaññāya, sattā gacchanti suggati’’nti.

knowing the Dhamma of the good, beings go to a good destination.”

Hiểu rõ Chánh pháp của người hiền, chúng sinh sẽ đi đến thiện thú.”

Then another deva spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

“One should associate only with good people, with good people one should form friendship;

Sataṃ saddhammamaññāya, sattā tiṭṭhanti sātata’’nti.

knowing the Dhamma of the good, beings remain in happiness perpetually.”

Hiểu rõ Chánh pháp của người hiền, chúng sinh sẽ an trụ lâu dài.”

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘kassa nu kho, bhagavā, subhāsita’’nti?

Then another deva said this to the Blessed One: “Whose saying, Venerable Sir, is well-spoken?”

Rồi một vị thiên nhân khác bạch Thế Tôn rằng: “Bạch Thế Tôn, lời ai nói là hay nhất?”

Sabbāsaṃ vo subhāsitaṃ pariyāyena, api ca mamapi suṇātha –

“All your sayings are well-spoken in their own way, but listen to mine too:

“Lời của tất cả các con đều là lời hay theo cách riêng, nhưng hãy nghe lời của Ta nữa:

‘‘Sabbhireva samāsetha, sabbhi kubbetha santhavaṃ;

“One should associate only with good people, with good people one should form friendship;

Sataṃ saddhammamaññāya, sabbadukkhā pamuccatī’’ti.

knowing the Dhamma of the good, one is liberated from all suffering.”

Hiểu rõ Chánh pháp của người hiền, sẽ được giải thoát khỏi mọi khổ đau.”

This is what the Blessed One said.

Thế Tôn đã nói như vậy.

Attamanā tā devatāyo bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā tatthevantaradhāyiṃsūti.

Those devas, delighted, having paid homage to the Blessed One and circumambulated him, vanished right there.

Các vị thiên nhân ấy hoan hỷ, đảnh lễ Thế Tôn, đi nhiễu hữu rồi biến mất tại chỗ đó.

Rồi, nhiều chư thiên thuộc nhóm Satullapa, khi đêm đã khuya, với dung sắc tuyệt đẹp, chiếu sáng toàn bộ khu rừng Jetavana, đã đến chỗ Thế Tôn; sau khi đến, họ đảnh lễ Thế Tôn rồi đứng sang một bên.

Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi –

Standing to one side, one deva uttered this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

Khi đứng sang một bên, một vị thiên nhân đã nói lên bài kệ này trước Thế Tôn –

‘‘Maccherā ca pamādā ca, evaṃ dānaṃ na dīyati^* ;

“Due to stinginess and heedlessness, giving is not done;

“Do sự keo kiệt và sự phóng dật, việc bố thí như vậy không được thực hiện;

Puññaṃ ākaṅkhamānena, deyyaṃ hoti vijānatā’’ti.

One who desires merit and knows the fruit of giving should give.”

Người mong cầu phước báu, người có trí tuệ, nên bố thí.”

Then another deva uttered these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:

Rồi, một vị thiên nhân khác đã nói lên những bài kệ này trước Thế Tôn –

‘‘Yasseva bhīto na dadāti maccharī, tadevādadato bhayaṃ;

“The miser, fearing something, does not give, and that very fear comes upon the one who does not give;

“Kẻ keo kiệt vì sợ hãi điều gì mà không bố thí, chính điều đó sẽ trở thành nỗi sợ hãi cho kẻ không bố thí;

Jighacchā ca pipāsā ca, yassa bhāyati maccharī;

Hunger and thirst, which the miser fears,

Đói khát mà kẻ keo kiệt sợ hãi,

Tameva bālaṃ phusati, asmiṃ loke paramhi ca.

That very thing afflicts the fool, in this world and the next.

Chính điều đó sẽ chạm đến kẻ ngu si ấy, trong đời này và cả đời sau.

‘‘Tasmā vineyya maccheraṃ, dajjā dānaṃ malābhibhū;

Therefore, having overcome stinginess, one who has conquered the defilement should give;

Vì vậy, hãy đoạn trừ sự keo kiệt, hãy bố thí, kẻ đã chiến thắng sự ô nhiễm;

Puññāni paralokasmiṃ, patiṭṭhā honti pāṇina’’nti.

Meritorious deeds are a refuge for beings in the next world.”

Phước báu trong đời sau, là chỗ nương tựa cho chúng sinh.”

‘‘Te matesu na mīyanti, panthānaṃva sahabbajaṃ;

“Those who share what little they have do not perish among the perished, like fellow travelers on a path;

“Những người bố thí một phần nhỏ cũng không chết trong số những người đã chết, giống như những người cùng đi trên một con đường;

Appasmiṃ ye pavecchanti, esa dhammo sanantano.

This is an ancient teaching.

Những ai bố thí một phần nhỏ, đó là Pháp vĩnh cửu.

‘‘Appasmeke pavecchanti, bahuneke na dicchare;

Some give from little, others do not wish to give from much;

Một số người bố thí một phần nhỏ, nhưng nhiều người lại không muốn bố thí nhiều;

Appasmā dakkhiṇā dinnā, sahassena samaṃ mitā’’ti.

A gift given from little is reckoned equal to a thousand.”

Bố thí một phần nhỏ, được so sánh ngang bằng với một ngàn.”

Then another deva uttered these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:

‘‘Duddadaṃ dadamānānaṃ, dukkaraṃ kamma kubbataṃ;

“The ignoble do not emulate those who give what is difficult to give, or do what is difficult to do;

“Việc bố thí khó bố thí, việc làm khó làm;

Asanto nānukubbanti, sataṃ dhammo duranvayo^* .

The practice of the good is hard to follow.

Kẻ bất thiện không thể làm theo, Pháp của bậc thiện khó theo dõi.

‘‘Tasmā satañca asataṃ^* , nānā hoti ito gati;

Therefore, the destination of the good and the ignoble is different from here;

Vì vậy, giữa bậc thiện và kẻ bất thiện, có sự khác biệt về đường đi từ đây;

Asanto nirayaṃ yanti, santo saggaparāyanā’’ti.

The ignoble go to hell, the good have heaven as their destination.”

Kẻ bất thiện đi đến địa ngục, bậc thiện có cõi trời làm nơi nương tựa.”

Then another deva said to the Blessed One, “Whose words, Venerable Sir, are well-spoken?”

Rồi, một vị thiên nhân khác đã thưa với Thế Tôn rằng: “Bạch Thế Tôn, lời nói của ai là lời nói hay?”

‘‘Sabbāsaṃ vo subhāsitaṃ pariyāyena; api ca mamapi suṇātha –

“All of your words are well-spoken, in due order; but listen to mine as well:

“Lời nói của tất cả các con đều là lời nói hay theo từng khía cạnh; nhưng các con cũng hãy lắng nghe Ta –

‘‘Dhammaṃ care yopi samuñjakaṃ care,

Even one who lives by gleaning, practicing the Dhamma,

Dù ai sống bằng nghề nhặt lượm,

Dārañca posaṃ dadamappakasmiṃ;

And supports a wife, giving a little;

Và nuôi vợ con, bố thí chút ít;

Sataṃ sahassānaṃ sahassayāginaṃ,

The gifts of a hundred thousand who offer sacrifices to a thousand recipients,

Are not worth a sixteenth part of such a person’s gift.”

Then another deva addressed the Blessed One with a verse:

“How is it that this vast and mighty sacrifice,

Does not equal the value of a gift given impartially?

Kathaṃ^* sataṃ sahassānaṃ sahassayāginaṃ,

How is it that a hundred thousand of those who offer sacrifices to a thousand recipients,

Kalampi nāgghanti tathāvidhassa te’’ti.

Are not worth a sixteenth part of such a person’s gift?”

“Some, being established in unrighteousness, give,
