Having paid homage to the Triple Gem, which is supreme among those worthy of homage,

Yo khuddakanikāyamhi, khuddācārappahāyinā.
which was taught in the Khuddaka Nikāya by the Lord of the World, who had abandoned ignoble conduct,
Đức Thế Tôn, bậc đã từ bỏ những hành vi thấp kém, đã thuyết giảng trong Tiểu Bộ Kinh,

Desito lokanāthena, lokanissaraṇesinā;
and who sought liberation from the world,
Bậc Bảo Hộ Thế Gian, bậc tìm kiếm sự thoát ly khỏi thế gian;

Tassa suttanipātassa, karissāmatthavaṇṇanaṃ.
I shall compose an explanation of the meaning of that Suttanipāta.
Ta sẽ thực hiện chú giải ý nghĩa của Kinh Tập ấy.

Ayaṃ suttanipāto ca, khuddakesveva ogadho;
And since this Suttanipāta is included only in the Khuddaka Nikāya,
Và vì Kinh Tập này chỉ nằm trong Tiểu Bộ Kinh,

Yasmā tasmā imassāpi, karissāmatthavaṇṇanaṃ.
I shall also compose an explanation of its meaning.
Cho nên, ta cũng sẽ thực hiện chú giải ý nghĩa của nó.

Gāthāsatasamākiṇṇo, geyyabyākaraṇaṅkito;
If it is asked, "Why is this text, which is replete with hundreds of verses and marked by geyya and vyākaraṇa, called the Suttanipāta?"
Nếu hỏi: “Cuốn sách này được kết tập từ hàng trăm bài kệ, được đánh dấu là geyya-vyākaraṇa (thi ca và giải thích), tại sao lại được gọi là Suttanipāta (Kinh Tập)?”

Kasmā suttanipātoti, saṅkhamesa gatoti ce.
If it is said, "Why has this text come to be called Suttanipāta?"
Nếu có ai hỏi rằng: ‘Tại sao tập kinh này được gọi là Suttanipāta?’

Suvuttato savanato, atthānaṃ suṭṭhu tāṇato;
Because it is called Sutta due to being well-spoken, due to being heard, due to excellently protecting meanings,
Vì được thuyết giảng khéo léo, vì được lắng nghe, vì bảo vệ ý nghĩa một cách tốt đẹp;

Sūcanā sūdanā ceva, yasmā suttaṃ pavuccati.
and due to indicating and flowing with meanings.
Và vì chỉ ra, vì làm rõ ý nghĩa, nên được gọi là Sutta (Kinh).

Tathārūpāni suttāni, nipātetvā tato tato;
Because this collection is compiled by gathering such suttas from various places,
Do đó, vì đã tập hợp những bài kinh như vậy từ khắp nơi,

Samūhato ayaṃ tasmā, saṅkhamevamupāgato.
it has thus acquired this designation.
Nên tập hợp này đã đạt được danh xưng ấy.

Sabbāni cāpi suttāni, pamāṇantena tādino;
And since all suttas are not equal in measure to the Tathāgata's words, and this is a collection of them from various places,
Và vì tất cả các bài kinh đều là lời dạy của bậc Như Lai,

Vacanāni ayaṃ tesaṃ, nipāto ca yato tato.
Because all the well-taught suttas are not equal in measure, therefore this text is merely a collection of those suttas.
Và đây là tập hợp của chúng từ khắp nơi.

Aññasaṅkhānimittānaṃ, visesānamabhāvato;
and because there are no other distinguishing marks or special characteristics,
Vì không có sự khác biệt về dấu hiệu của các danh xưng khác,

Saṅkhaṃ suttanipātoti, evameva samajjhagāti.
it has thus attained the designation "Suttanipāta."
Nên nó đã đạt được danh xưng Suttanipāta (Kinh Tập) như vậy.
