206. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmatā upanandena sakyaputtena rañño pasenadissa kosalassa vassāvāso paṭissuto hoti purimikāya.

At that time, the Rains residence had been promised in advance by Venerable Upananda the Sakyan to King Pasenadi of Kosala.

206. Vào lúc bấy giờ, Tôn giả Upananda người dòng Sakya đã hứa an cư kiết hạ đầu tiên cho vua Pasenadi xứ Kosala.

So taṃ āvāsaṃ gacchanto addasa antarāmagge dve āvāse bahucīvarake.

As he was going to that dwelling, he saw two dwellings along the way where many robes were offered.

Vị ấy khi đang đi đến trú xứ đó, trên đường đã thấy hai trú xứ có nhiều y.

Tassa etadahosi – ‘‘yaṃnūnāhaṃ imesu dvīsu āvāsesu vassaṃ vaseyyaṃ.

He thought: ‘‘What if I were to reside for the Rains in these two dwellings?

Vị ấy nghĩ rằng: “Chẳng lẽ ta nên an cư mùa mưa ở hai trú xứ này.

Evaṃ me bahuṃ cīvaraṃ^* uppajjissatī’’ti.

Thus, many robes will arise for me.’’

Như vậy nhiều y sẽ phát sinh cho ta.”

So tesu dvīsu āvāsesu vassaṃ vasi.

So he resided for the Rains in those two dwellings.

Vị ấy đã an cư mùa mưa ở hai trú xứ đó.

Rājā pasenadi kosalo ujjhāyati khiyyati vipāceti – ‘‘kathañhi nāma ayyo upanando sakyaputto amhākaṃ vassāvāsaṃ paṭissuṇitvā visaṃvādessati.

King Pasenadi of Kosala complained, grumbled, and criticized: ‘‘How can venerable Upananda the Sakyan, having promised our Rains residence, deceive us?

Vua Pasenadi xứ Kosala than phiền, bực bội, chỉ trích rằng: “Làm sao mà Tôn giả Upananda, người Sakya, lại không giữ lời sau khi đã hứa chấp an cư mùa mưa với chúng ta.

Nanu bhagavatā anekapariyāyena musāvādo garahito, musāvādā veramaṇī pasatthā’’ti.

Has not the Blessed One in many ways censured false speech, and praised abstinence from false speech?’’

Chẳng phải Đức Thế Tôn đã quở trách sự nói dối bằng nhiều phương cách, và tán thán sự tránh xa nói dối sao?”

Assosuṃ kho bhikkhū rañño pasenadissa kosalassa ujjhāyantassa khiyyantassa vipācentassa.

Indeed, the bhikkhus heard King Pasenadi of Kosala complaining, grumbling, and criticizing.

Chư Tỳ-khưu đã nghe vua Pasenadi xứ Kosala than phiền, bực bội, chỉ trích.

Ye te bhikkhū appicchā…pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti – ‘‘kathañhi nāma āyasmā upanando sakyaputto rañño pasenadissa kosalassa vassāvāsaṃ paṭissuṇitvā visaṃvādessati.

Those bhikkhus who were of few desires… they complained, grumbled, and criticized: ‘‘How can venerable Upananda the Sakyan, having promised King Pasenadi of Kosala a Rains residence, deceive him?

Những vị Tỳ-khưu có ít dục vọng…pe… họ than phiền, bực bội, chỉ trích rằng: “Làm sao mà Tôn giả Upananda, người Sakya, lại không giữ lời sau khi đã hứa chấp an cư mùa mưa với vua Pasenadi xứ Kosala.

Nanu bhagavatā anekapariyāyena musāvādo garahito, musāvādā veramaṇī pasatthā’’ti.

Atha kho te bhikkhū bhagavato etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ…pe… atha kho bhagavā etasmiṃ nidāne etasmiṃ pakaraṇe bhikkhusaṅghaṃ sannipātāpetvā āyasmantaṃ upanandaṃ sakyaputtaṃ paṭipucchi – ‘‘saccaṃ kira tvaṃ, upananda, rañño pasenadissa kosalassa vassāvāsaṃ paṭissuṇitvā visaṃvādesī’’ti?

Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One… Then the Blessed One, on account of this incident, on account of this matter, had the Bhikkhu Saṅgha assembled and questioned Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: ‘‘Is it true, Upananda, that having promised King Pasenadi of Kosala a Rains residence, you deceived him?’’

Rồi chư Tỳ-khưu ấy đã trình sự việc đó lên Đức Thế Tôn…pe… Rồi Đức Thế Tôn, nhân duyên này, nhân sự việc này, đã triệu tập Tăng đoàn và hỏi Tôn giả Upananda, người Sakya: “Này Upananda, có thật là ông đã không giữ lời sau khi đã hứa chấp an cư mùa mưa với vua Pasenadi xứ Kosala không?”

‘‘Saccaṃ, bhagavā’’ti.

‘‘It is true, Blessed One,’’ he replied.

“Bạch Đức Thế Tôn, thật vậy.”

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā…pe… kathañhi nāma tvaṃ, moghapurisa, rañño pasenadissa kosalassa vassāvāsaṃ paṭissuṇitvā visaṃvādessasi.

The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him… ‘‘How can you, foolish man, having promised King Pasenadi of Kosala a Rains residence, deceive him?

Đức Phật, Đức Thế Tôn đã quở trách…pe… “Này kẻ si mê, làm sao mà ông lại không giữ lời sau khi đã hứa chấp an cư mùa mưa với vua Pasenadi xứ Kosala.

Nanu mayā, moghapurisa, anekapariyāyena musāvādo garahito, musāvādā veramaṇī pasatthā.

Have I not, foolish man, in many ways censured false speech, and praised abstinence from false speech?

Này kẻ si mê, chẳng phải Ta đã quở trách sự nói dối bằng nhiều phương cách, và tán thán sự tránh xa nói dối sao?

Netaṃ, moghapurisa, appasannānaṃ vā pasādāya…pe… vigarahitvā…pe… dhammiṃ kathaṃ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi –

This, foolish man, is not for the conviction of the unconvinced… Having rebuked him… having given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus –

207. ‘‘Here, bhikkhus, a Rains residence for the first half of the Rains has been promised by a bhikkhu.

207. Này chư Tỳ-khưu, ở đây, một Tỳ-khưu đã hứa chấp an cư mùa mưa đầu.

So taṃ āvāsaṃ gacchanto passati antarāmagge dve āvāse bahucīvarake.

As he goes to that dwelling, he sees two dwellings along the way where many robes are offered.

Vị ấy khi đang đi đến trú xứ đó, đã thấy hai trú xứ có nhiều y trên đường đi.

Tassa evaṃ hoti – ‘‘yaṃnūnāhaṃ imesu dvīsu āvāsesu vassaṃ vaseyyaṃ.

He thinks: ‘‘What if I were to reside for the Rains in these two dwellings?

Vị ấy nghĩ rằng: “Chẳng lẽ ta nên an cư mùa mưa ở hai trú xứ này.

Evaṃ me bahuṃ cīvaraṃ uppajjissatī’’ti.

Thus, many robes will arise for me.’’

Như vậy nhiều y sẽ phát sinh cho ta.”

So tesu dvīsu āvāsesu vassaṃ vasati.

So he resides for the Rains in those two dwellings.

Vị ấy đã an cư mùa mưa ở hai trú xứ đó.

For that bhikkhu, bhikkhus, the first half of the Rains is not established, and there is an offense of dukkata for the promise.

As he goes to that dwelling, he performs Uposatha outside, enters the monastery on the day after Uposatha, prepares the sleeping and sitting places, provides drinking and washing water, and sweeps the monastery precincts.

Vị ấy khi đang đi đến trú xứ đó, đã làm lễ Uposatha bên ngoài, vào ngày đầu tháng đã đến trú xứ, sắp xếp chỗ nằm chỗ ngồi, chuẩn bị nước uống nước dùng, quét dọn khu vực.

So tadaheva akaraṇīyo pakkamati.

On that very day, he departs, having no business to do.

Vị ấy đã rời đi ngay trong ngày đó mà không có việc cần làm.

He departs for a business before the Pavāraṇā (end of Rains ceremony).

Vị ấy đã rời đi vì có việc cần làm khi còn bảy ngày nữa là đến lễ Pavāraṇā.

Āgaccheyya vā so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu taṃ āvāsaṃ na vā āgaccheyya, tassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno purimikā ca paññāyati, paṭissave ca anāpatti.

Whether that bhikkhu, bhikkhus, comes back to that dwelling or not, for that bhikkhu, bhikkhus, the first half of the Rains is established, and there is no offense for the promise.

Này chư Tỳ-khưu, dù Tỳ-khưu ấy có trở lại trú xứ đó hay không, an cư mùa mưa đầu của Tỳ-khưu ấy vẫn được chấp nhận, và không có tội do lời hứa.

He departs on that very day, having something to do… he departs after staying two or three days, having nothing to do… he departs after staying two or three days, having something to do… he departs after staying two or three days, having a seven-day task.

Vị ấy ngay trong ngày đó khởi hành vì có việc cần làm…pe… vị ấy ở lại hai ba ngày rồi khởi hành vì không có việc cần làm…pe… vị ấy ở lại hai ba ngày rồi khởi hành vì có việc cần làm…pe… vị ấy ở lại hai ba ngày rồi khởi hành vì có việc cần làm trong bảy ngày.

So taṃ sattāhaṃ bahiddhā vītināmeti.

He spends those seven days outside.
