Question – Then, friend, by the Blessed One…pe… the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, where, concerning whom, in what context, and how was the Āḷavaka Sutta in the Yakṣa Saṃyutta spoken?

Hỏi – Này chư hiền, bởi đức Thế Tôn ấy... ... bậc Chánh Đẳng Giác, trong Tương Ưng Dạ-xoa, kinh Āḷavaka đã được nói ở đâu, liên quan đến ai, trong sự việc gì, và như thế nào?

Vissajjanā – āḷaviyaṃ bhante āḷavakassa yakkhassa bhavane āḷavakaṃ yakkhaṃ ārabbha bhāsitaṃ.

Answer – In Āḷavī, venerable sir, in the abode of the yakṣa Āḷavaka, it was spoken concerning the yakṣa Āḷavaka.

Đáp – Bạch ngài, tại Āḷavī, trong trú xứ của dạ-xoa Āḷavaka, đã được nói liên quan đến dạ-xoa Āḷavaka.

Āḷavako bhante yakkho bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi–

Venerable sir, the yakṣa Āḷavaka addressed the Blessed One with a verse—

A life lived with wisdom is said to be the best.”

Người ta nói, sống bằng trí tuệ là đời sống cao quý nhất.

Beginning thus, venerable sir, was spoken by the Blessed One.

Na khvāhaṃ taṃ āvuso nikkhamissāmi, yaṃ te karaṇīyaṃ, taṃ karohi,

“Indeed, friend, I will not depart until you have done what you need to do.

Này hiền giả, ta sẽ không đi ra đâu, ngươi cần làm gì thì hãy làm.

Pañhaṃ taṃ samaṇa pucchissāmi, sace me na byākarissasi, cittaṃ vā te khipissāmi, hadayaṃ vā te phālessāmi, pādesu vā gahetvā pāragaṅgāya khipissāmi–

I will ask you a question, ascetic. If you do not answer me, I will either shatter your mind, or burst your heart, or take you by the feet and throw you across the Ganges.”

Này Sa-môn, ta sẽ hỏi ngươi một câu hỏi, nếu ngươi không trả lời cho ta, ta sẽ làm cho tâm ngươi rối loạn, hoặc ta sẽ làm vỡ tim ngươi, hoặc ta sẽ nắm chân ngươi ném qua bên kia sông Hằng–

Kiṃ sūkha vittaṃ purisassa seṭṭhaṃ, kiṃ su suciṇṇaṃ sukhamāvahāti;

“What indeed is the best wealth for a person? What well-practiced thing brings happiness?

Ở đây, tài sản nào của con người là cao quý nhất, điều gì được thực hành tốt đẹp mang lại hạnh phúc?

Kiṃ su have sādubharaṃ rasānaṃ, kathaṃ jīviṃ jīvitamāhu seṭṭhaṃ–

What indeed is sweeter than flavors? How is a life lived, said to be the best?”

Thực sự, vị nào trong các vị là ngọt ngào nhất, người ta nói, sống như thế nào là đời sống cao quý nhất?

Saddhīdha vittaṃ purisassa seṭṭhaṃ, dhammo suciṇṇo sukhamāvahāti;

“Faith here is the best wealth for a person; Dhamma well-practiced brings happiness;

Tín ở đây là tài sản cao quý nhất của con người, Pháp được thực hành tốt đẹp mang lại hạnh phúc;

Saccaṃ have sādutaraṃ rasānaṃ, paññājīviṃ jīvitamāhu seṭṭhaṃ;

Truth indeed is sweeter than flavors; a life lived with wisdom is said to be the best.”

Thực sự, chân lý là vị ngọt ngào nhất trong các vị, người ta nói, sống bằng trí tuệ là đời sống cao quý nhất;

Kathaṃsu tarati oghaṃ, kathaṃsu tarati aṇṇavaṃ;

“How indeed does one cross the flood? How indeed does one cross the ocean?

Làm sao vượt qua bộc lưu, làm sao vượt qua biển cả?

Kathaṃsu dukkha macceti, kathaṃsu parisujjhati.

How indeed does one overcome suffering? How indeed does one become purified?”

Làm sao vượt qua khổ đau, làm sao được thanh tịnh?

Saddhāya tarati oghaṃ, appamādena aṇṇavaṃ;

“By faith one crosses the flood; by diligence, the ocean;

Nhờ tín mà vượt qua bộc lưu, nhờ không phóng dật mà vượt qua biển cả;

Vīriyena dukkha macceti, paññāya parisujjhati–

By effort one overcomes suffering; by wisdom one is purified.”

Nhờ tinh tấn mà vượt qua khổ đau, nhờ trí tuệ mà được thanh tịnh–

Kathaṃsu labhate paññaṃ, kathaṃsu vindate dhanaṃ;

“How indeed does one gain wisdom? How indeed does one find wealth?

Làm sao có được trí tuệ, làm sao tìm được của cải?

Kathaṃsu kittiṃ pappoti, kathaṃ mittāni ganthati;

How indeed does one attain fame? How does one bind friends?

Làm sao đạt được danh tiếng, làm sao kết được bạn bè?

Asmā lokā paraṃ lokaṃ, kathaṃ pecca na socati–

How does one, having passed from this world to the next, not grieve?”

Từ đời này sang đời khác, làm sao chết mà không sầu muộn–

Saddahāno arahataṃ, dhammaṃ nibbānapattiyā;

“Believing in the Arahants’ Dhamma for the attainment of Nibbāna;

Tin tưởng vào Pháp của các bậc A-la-hán để chứng đắc Niết-bàn;

Sussūsaṃ labhate paññaṃ, appamatto vicakkhaṇo;

One who is heedful and discerning gains wisdom from listening;

Người biết lắng nghe đạt được trí tuệ, người không phóng dật, sáng suốt;

Patirūpakārī dhuravā, uṭṭhātā vindate dhanaṃ;

One who acts suitably, is steadfast, and energetic finds wealth;

Người làm việc đúng đắn, kiên trì, nỗ lực đạt được tài sản;

Saccena kittiṃ pappoti, dadaṃ mittāni ganthati;

By truth one attains renown; by giving one binds friends;

Nhờ chân thật đạt được danh tiếng, người bố thí kết giao bạn bè;

Asmā lokā paraṃ lokaṃ, evaṃ pecca na socati;

From this world to the next, such a one does not grieve after passing away;

For a faithful householder, if these four qualities (are present):

Saccaṃ dhammo dhiti cāgo, sa ve peccana socati–

Truth, Dhamma, steadfastness, and generosity – he truly does not grieve after passing away–

Question – Friends, where, concerning whom, and how was the Vatapada Sutta in the Sakkasaṃyutta spoken by the Blessed One?

Hỏi – Thưa Tôn giả, Kinh Vatapada trong Tương Ưng Thích Ca được Đức Thế Tôn thuyết giảng ở đâu, liên quan đến ai và như thế nào?

Vissajjanā – sāvatthiyaṃ bhante sambahule bhikkhū ārabbha sakkassa bhikkhave devānamindassa pubbe manussabhūtassa satta vatapadāni samattāni samādinnāni ahesuṃ, yesaṃ samādinnattā sakko sakkattaṃ ajjhagāti evamādinā bhante bhagavatā bhāsitaṃ.

Answer – Bhante, it was spoken at Sāvatthī, concerning several bhikkhus. Bhante, the Blessed One spoke it beginning with: “Bhikkhus, when Sakka, King of the Devas, was formerly a human being, he undertook and completed seven vow-paths, by the undertaking of which Sakka attained the state of Sakka.”

Đáp – Thưa Đại đức, tại Sāvatthī, liên quan đến một số Tỳ-kheo, Đức Thế Tôn đã thuyết giảng như sau: “Này các Tỳ-kheo, khi còn là người phàm, Sakka, vua của chư Thiên, đã hoàn thành và thực hành bảy giới hạnh (vatapada). Nhờ việc thực hành những giới hạnh này mà Sakka đã đạt được địa vị Sakka.” Thưa Đại đức, Đức Thế Tôn đã thuyết giảng như vậy.

Sakkassa bhikkhave devānamindassa pubbe manussabhūtassa imāni satta vatapadāni samattāni samādinnāni ahesuṃ.

“Bhikkhus, when Sakka, King of the Devas, was formerly a human being, he undertook and completed these seven vow-paths:

Mātāpettibharaṃ jantuṃ, kule jeṭṭhāpacāyinaṃ;

A being who supports mother and father,

Saṇhaṃ sakhilasambhāsaṃ, pesuṇeyyappahāyinaṃ;

Who reveres the elders in the family,

Lời nói dịu dàng, thân thiện, từ bỏ lời nói chia rẽ;

Maccheravinaye yuttaṃ, saccaṃ kodhābhibhuṃ naraṃ;

Who speaks gently and kindly, who abandons backbiting, who is intent on the subduing of stinginess, a person truthful and subduing anger –

Chuyên tâm đoạn trừ xan tham, người chế ngự được sân hận bằng chân thật;

Taṃ ve devā tāvatiṃsā, āhu ‘‘sappuriso’’iti.

Him do the Tāvatiṃsa devas call a ‘good person’.”

Chư Thiên Ba mươi ba gọi người ấy là ‘bậc thiện nhân’.

Question – Friends, where, concerning whom, and how was the Dalidda Sutta spoken?

Hỏi – Thưa Tôn giả, Kinh Dalidda được thuyết giảng ở đâu, liên quan đến ai và như thế nào?

Rājagahe bhante sambahule bhikkhū ārabbha ‘‘bhūtapubbaṃ bhikkhave aññataro puriso imasmiṃyeva rājagahe manussadaliddo ahosi manussakapaṇo manussavarāko, so tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye saddhaṃ samādiyi, sīlaṃ, sutaṃ, cāgaṃ, paññaṃ samādiyī’’ti evamādinā bhante bhagavatā bhāsitaṃ.

Bhante, it was spoken at Rājagaha, concerning several bhikkhus, beginning with: “Bhikkhus, in the past, a certain man in this very Rājagaha was destitute among humans, poor among humans, wretched among humans. He undertook faith, morality, learning, generosity, and wisdom in the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata.” Thus, Bhante, was it spoken by the Blessed One.

Thưa Đại đức, tại Rājagaha, liên quan đến một số Tỳ-kheo, Đức Thế Tôn đã thuyết giảng như sau: “Này các Tỳ-kheo, thuở xưa, có một người đàn ông nghèo khổ, khốn cùng, bất hạnh ở chính Rājagaha này. Người ấy đã có đức tin vào Pháp và Luật do Như Lai tuyên thuyết, đã có giới, đã có học vấn, đã có bố thí, đã có trí tuệ.” Thưa Đại đức, Đức Thế Tôn đã thuyết giảng như vậy.

Yassa saddhā tathāgate, acalā suppatiṭṭhitā;

One whose faith in the Tathāgata is unwavering, well-established;

Ai có đức tin bất động, kiên cố nơi Như Lai;

Sīlañca yassa kalyāṇaṃ, ariyakantaṃ pasaṃsitaṃ.

And whose morality is wholesome, praised by the noble ones, endearing.

Và giới hạnh của người ấy là thiện lành, được bậc Thánh ưa thích và tán thán.

This Saṅgha is upright, endowed with wisdom and morality;

For humans who make sacrifices, beings seeking merit,

Question – Friends, where, concerning whom, and how was the Gahaṭṭhavandanā Sutta spoken by the Blessed One?

Hỏi – Thưa Tôn giả, Kinh Gahaṭṭhavandanā được Đức Thế Tôn thuyết giảng ở đâu, liên quan đến ai và như thế nào?

Vissajjanā – sāvatthiyaṃ bhante sambahule bhikkhū ārabbha ‘‘bhūtapubbaṃ bhikkhave sakko devānamindo mātaliṃ saṅgāhakaṃ āmantesī’’ti evamādinā bhante bhagavatā bhāsitaṃ.

Answer – Bhante, it was spoken at Sāvatthī, concerning several bhikkhus, beginning with: “Bhikkhus, in the past, Sakka, King of the Devas, addressed Mātali the charioteer.” Thus, Bhante, was it spoken by the Blessed One.

Đáp – Thưa Đại đức, tại Sāvatthī, liên quan đến một số Tỳ-kheo, Đức Thế Tôn đã thuyết giảng như sau: “Này các Tỳ-kheo, thuở xưa, Sakka, vua của chư Thiên, đã gọi Mātali, người đánh xe.” Thưa Đại đức, Đức Thế Tôn đã thuyết giảng như vậy.

Taṃ namassanti tevijjā, sabbe bhummāca khattiyā;

“The devas of the three knowledges, all earthly khattiyas,

Những bậc Tam Minh, tất cả các vị vua chư Thiên cõi đất đều đảnh lễ người ấy;

Cattāro ca mahārājā, tidasāca yasassino;

The four Great Kings, and the glorious Tāvatiṃsa devas –

Bốn vị Đại Thiên Vương và chư Thiên Ba mươi ba đầy uy lực;

Athako nāma so yakkho, yaṃ tvaṃ sakka namassasi–

What yakkhha is it, Sakka, that you salute?”

Vậy Dạ-xoa đó tên là gì, mà ngài Sakka đảnh lễ?

Ahañca sīlasampanne, cirarattasamāhite;

“I salute those endowed with morality, who have long been in concentration,

Ta đảnh lễ những bậc đầy đủ giới hạnh, đã an trú lâu dài;

Sammāpabbajite vande, brahmacariyaparāyane.

Who have rightly gone forth, devoted to the holy life.

Những bậc xuất gia chân chính, chuyên tâm vào đời sống Phạm hạnh.

Ye gahaṭṭhā puññakarā, sīlavanto upāsakā;

Those householders who perform meritorious deeds, virtuous lay followers;

Những cư sĩ tạo phước, những cận sự nam giữ giới;

Dhammena dāraṃ posenti, te namassāmi mātali.

Who support their wives righteously, them I salute, Mātali.”

Nuôi vợ con bằng Chánh pháp, thưa Mātali, ta đảnh lễ những người ấy.
