“Clinging to this essence-less body, a mass of bones and sinews;

Full of phlegm, excrement, and urine, a putrid corpse.

Then Sumedhā spoke to her parents: “May such things as authority in King Aṇikagutta’s kingdom not be mine. Why? Because saṃsāra, existing in the three realms, is without essence. Therefore, either renunciation or death will surely be mine. The betrothal to King Aṇikagutta will not take place.”

Reflecting wisely, why would I desire marriage?

“Three hundred and ninety-nine spears might fall upon this body every day;

Even a hundred years of such torment is better, if it leads to the cessation of suffering.

“Today itself, dear father, I shall go forth; what use are essence-less possessions?

I am disgusted with sensual pleasures; they are like vomit, like a palm-stump.”

“Every day, three hundred new spears might fall upon my body. If this were to lead to the cessation of suffering, then even a hundred years of such falling blows would be preferable.”

When the time for marriage arrived in Vāraṇavatī, she went forth.

While she was thus absorbed, Anīkaratta arrived in the city;

And Sumedhā in the palace was cultivating the perception of impermanence.

“For beings who have fallen into the lower realms and are tormented by piercing, cutting, and so forth, many bodily and mental sufferings appear in the four lower realms. Even in the deva realms, there is no refuge due to the torment of passion, etc. There is no other happiness superior to the bliss of Nibbāna.”

While she was contemplating, Anīkaratta swiftly ascended;

His body adorned with jewels and gold, he entreated Sumedhā with clasped hands.

“Those noble ones who are diligent in the teaching of the Buddha, striving for the abandonment of birth and death, free from other concerns, those noble ones are said to have attained Nibbāna.”

“Dominion in the kingdom, wealth, sovereignty, and pleasant enjoyments are yours; you are young;

Enjoy sensual pleasures, for sensual delights are rare in the world.

“Parents, I will go forth and renounce today. What use are these essenceless sensual pleasures? I am disgusted with sensual pleasures; I have vomited them up as if they were vomit. I have rendered them like a palm-stump, never to grow again.”

“The kingdom is entrusted to you; enjoy the possessions, give donations;

Do not be disheartened; your parents are distressed.”

When she had spoken thus, her parents said: “My dear daughter, you are still young; it is not yet time for renunciation. We have given you, our beloved daughter, to Aṇikagutta, the prince. The time for your marriage is now near, as you have been given to Prince Aṇikagutta.”

Đừng buồn rầu, cha mẹ con đang đau khổ.”

Taṃ taṃ bhaṇati sumedhā, kāmehi anatthikā vigatamohā;

To him, Sumedhā, uninterested in sensual pleasures and free from delusion, replied:

“Do not delight in sensual pleasures; see the danger in sensual pleasures.

After speaking with her parents, Princess Sumedhā cut off her hair, which was dark, dense, and soft like the wings of a beetle or the silk-cotton tree, with a sharp sword. She then closed the palace and entered the first jhāna.

And that Princess Sumedhā was absorbed in jhāna in that palace. Prince Aṇikagutta arrived in the city of Mantāvatī. Princess Sumedhā, right there in the palace, was well developing the perception of impermanence.

“Blazing grass-torches burn the one who grasps them, but do not burn the one who lets them go. Those beings who do not let go of those sensual pleasures, those beings are burned in this life and the next.”

Thus Princess Sumedhā delivered a Dhamma discourse. Princess Sumedhā, not finding delight in the aggregates, and wishing to persuade Prince Aṇikagutta, threw her own hair, which she had cut with a sword, down to the ground from the palace.

Công chúa Sumedhā đã thuyết pháp như vậy. Không tìm thấy niềm vui trong các hành (saṅkhāra), công chúa Sumedhā đã ném mái tóc của mình, đã được cắt bằng kiếm, xuống đất, mong muốn vua Aṇikagutta được an ủi.

That Prince Aṇikagutta rose from his seat, and with clasped hands, implored her father, King Koñca. How did he implore? “Please permit Sumedhā to go forth and renounce. May she realize the infallible Nibbāna.” Thus he implored.

Vua Aṇikagutta đứng dậy, chắp tay và cầu xin vua Koñca, cha của công chúa. Vua cầu xin thế nào? “Xin hãy cho phép Sumedhā xuất gia. Mong công chúa chứng ngộ Niết-bàn bất biến.” Vua đã cầu xin như vậy.
