822. Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā vesāliyaṃ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṃ.
Thus have I heard: On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling in Vesālī, in the Great Wood, at the Gabled Hall.
822. Tôi nghe như vầy: Một thời Thế Tôn trú tại Vesālī, trong Đại Lâm, tại giảng đường Kūṭāgāra.
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya vesāliṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Then, in the forenoon, the Blessed One dressed, took his bowl and robe, and entered Vesālī for alms.
Rồi Thế Tôn vào buổi sáng, đắp y, cầm bát y, đi vào Vesālī để khất thực.
Vesāliyaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘gaṇhāhi, ānanda, nisīdanaṃ.
Having walked for alms in Vesālī and returned from his alms round after his meal, the Blessed One addressed Venerable Ānanda: “Take the sitting mat, Ānanda.
Sau khi khất thực tại Vesālī, dùng bữa xong, Thế Tôn gọi Tôn giả Ānanda: “Này Ānanda, hãy cầm chỗ ngồi.
Yena cāpālaṃ cetiyaṃ* tenupasaṅkamissāma divāvihārāyā’’ti.
We shall go to the Cāpāla Shrine for the day’s abiding.”
Chúng ta sẽ đi đến Chiêu Đề Cāpāla để nghỉ ban ngày.”
‘‘Evaṃ bhante’’ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paṭissutvā nisīdanaṃ ādāya bhagavantaṃ piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhi.
“Yes, venerable sir,” Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One, took the sitting mat, and followed behind the Blessed One.
“Thưa vâng, bạch Thế Tôn,” Tôn giả Ānanda vâng lời Thế Tôn, cầm chỗ ngồi đi theo sau lưng Thế Tôn.
Atha kho bhagavā yena cāpālaṃ cetiyaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
Then the Blessed One went to the Cāpāla Shrine; having gone there, he sat down on the prepared seat.
Rồi Thế Tôn đi đến Chiêu Đề Cāpāla; sau khi đến, Ngài ngồi xuống chỗ đã trải sẵn.
Āyasmāpi kho ānando bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.
Venerable Ānanda, too, having paid homage to the Blessed One, sat down to one side.
Tôn giả Ānanda cũng đảnh lễ Thế Tôn rồi ngồi xuống một bên.
Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ bhagavā etadavoca –
Then the Blessed One said to Venerable Ānanda, who was sitting to one side:

‘‘Ramaṇīyā, ānanda, vesālī, ramaṇīyaṃ udenaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ gotamakaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ sattambaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ bahuputtaṃ cetiyaṃ* , ramaṇīyaṃ sārandadaṃ cetiyaṃ* , ramaṇīyaṃ cāpālaṃ cetiyaṃ.
“Pleasant, Ānanda, is Vesālī; pleasant is the Udena Shrine; pleasant is the Gotamaka Shrine; pleasant is the Sattamba Shrine; pleasant is the Bahuputta Shrine; pleasant is the Sārandada Shrine; pleasant is the Cāpāla Shrine.
“Này Ānanda, Vesālī thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Udena thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Gotamaka thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Sattamba thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Bahuputta thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Sārandada thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Cāpāla thật đáng yêu.
Yassa kassaci, ānanda, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā, so ākaṅkhamāno kappaṃ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṃ vā.
Whoever, Ānanda, has developed, frequently practiced, made a vehicle of, made a basis of, sustained, accumulated, and properly undertaken the four bases of spiritual power, should he wish, could remain for an eon or for the remainder of an eon.
Này Ānanda, bất cứ ai đã tu tập, làm cho sung mãn, làm thành cỗ xe, làm thành căn bản, kiên trì, tích lũy, khéo khởi sự bốn căn bản thần thông, người ấy nếu muốn, có thể an trú một kiếp hoặc một phần kiếp còn lại.
Tathāgatassa kho, ānanda, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā.
The Tathāgata, Ānanda, has developed, frequently practiced, made a vehicle of, made a basis of, sustained, accumulated, and properly undertaken the four bases of spiritual power.
Này Ānanda, Như Lai đã tu tập, làm cho sung mãn, làm thành cỗ xe, làm thành căn bản, kiên trì, tích lũy, khéo khởi sự bốn căn bản thần thông.
Ākaṅkhamāno, ānanda, tathāgato kappaṃ vā tiṭṭheyya kappāvasesaṃ vā’’ti.
Should he wish, Ānanda, the Tathāgata could remain for an eon or for the remainder of an eon.”
Này Ānanda, Như Lai nếu muốn, có thể an trú một kiếp hoặc một phần kiếp còn lại.”

Evampi kho āyasmā ānando bhagavatā oḷārike nimitte kayiramāne oḷārike obhāse kayiramāne nāsakkhi paṭivijjhituṃ; na bhagavantaṃ yāci – ‘‘tiṭṭhatu, bhante, bhagavā kappaṃ, tiṭṭhatu sugato kappaṃ* bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāya atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussāna’’nti yathā taṃ mārena pariyuṭṭhitacitto.
Even though the Blessed One was thus giving a gross intimation, a gross indication, Venerable Ānanda was unable to comprehend it; he did not entreat the Blessed One: “May the Blessed One remain for an eon! May the Fortunate One remain for an eon for the welfare of many, for the happiness of many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans!”—as if his mind was overcome by Māra.
Dù Thế Tôn đã đưa ra dấu hiệu rõ ràng như vậy, đã đưa ra ánh sáng rõ ràng như vậy, Tôn giả Ānanda vẫn không thể thấu hiểu; không thỉnh cầu Thế Tôn: “Bạch Thế Tôn, xin Thế Tôn hãy an trú một kiếp, xin Thiện Thệ hãy an trú một kiếp vì lợi ích của số đông, vì hạnh phúc của số đông, vì lòng bi mẫn đối với thế gian, vì lợi ích, vì hạnh phúc của chư thiên và loài người,” bởi vì tâm của Tôn giả đã bị Ma vương ám ảnh.

Dutiyampi kho bhagavā…pe… tatiyampi kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘ramaṇīyā, ānanda, vesālī, ramaṇīyaṃ udenaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ gotamakaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ sattambaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ bahuputtaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ sārandadaṃ cetiyaṃ, ramaṇīyaṃ cāpālaṃ cetiyaṃ.
A second time, monks, the Blessed One…pe… A third time, monks, the Blessed One addressed Venerable Ānanda: “Pleasant, Ānanda, is Vesālī; pleasant is the Udena Shrine; pleasant is the Gotamaka Shrine; pleasant is the Sattamba Shrine; pleasant is the Bahuputta Shrine; pleasant is the Sārandada Shrine; pleasant is the Cāpāla Shrine.
Lần thứ hai, Thế Tôn… Lần thứ ba, Thế Tôn gọi Tôn giả Ānanda: “Này Ānanda, Vesālī thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Udena thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Gotamaka thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Sattamba thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Bahuputta thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Sārandada thật đáng yêu, Chiêu Đề Cāpāla thật đáng yêu.

Này Ānanda, Như Lai đã tu tập, làm cho sung mãn, làm thành cỗ xe, làm thành căn bản, kiên trì, tích lũy, khéo khởi sự bốn căn bản thần thông.

Even so, when the Blessed One was making such an obvious sign and such an evident intimation, Venerable Ānanda was unable to comprehend it, nor did he entreat the Blessed One: “May the Blessed One remain, Venerable Sir, for an eon; may the Fortunate One remain for an eon, for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and humans,” because his mind was possessed by Māra.
Dù vậy, khi Đức Thế Tôn tạo ra những điềm tướng rõ rệt, những ánh sáng rõ rệt, Tôn giả Ānanda đã không thể nhận ra; và đã không thỉnh cầu Đức Thế Tôn: “Bạch Thế Tôn, xin Đức Thế Tôn hãy an trụ trọn một kiếp sống, xin Thiện Thệ hãy an trụ trọn một kiếp sống, vì lợi ích cho số đông, vì an lạc cho số đông, vì lòng bi mẫn đối với thế gian, vì lợi ích, vì hạnh phúc, vì an lạc cho chư thiên và loài người,” như thể tâm của ngài bị Māra chi phối.

Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘gaccha kho tvaṃ, ānanda, yassa dāni kālaṃ maññasī’’ti.
Then the Blessed One addressed Venerable Ānanda: “Go now, Ānanda, when you think it is the right time.”
Rồi Đức Thế Tôn bảo Tôn giả Ānanda: “Này Ānanda, con hãy đi, bây giờ con thấy lúc nào thích hợp thì cứ đi.”
‘‘Evaṃ, bhante’’ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā avidūre aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle nisīdi.
“Yes, Venerable Sir,” replied Venerable Ānanda, and rising from his seat, he bowed to the Blessed One, circumambulated him clockwise, and sat down at the foot of a certain tree not far away.
“Vâng, bạch Thế Tôn,” Tôn giả Ānanda đáp lời Đức Thế Tôn, rồi từ chỗ ngồi đứng dậy, đảnh lễ Đức Thế Tôn, đi nhiễu bên phải, và ngồi xuống dưới một gốc cây không xa.
Atha kho māro pāpimā, acirapakkante āyasmante ānande, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ etadavoca – ‘‘parinibbātu dāni, bhante, bhagavā, parinibbātu dāni sugato* !
Then Māra, the Evil One, not long after Venerable Ānanda had departed, approached the Blessed One, and having approached, he said to the Blessed One: “May the Blessed One now attain parinibbāna, Venerable Sir; may the Fortunate One now attain parinibbāna!
Rồi Māra Ác ma, không lâu sau khi Tôn giả Ānanda rời đi, đến chỗ Đức Thế Tôn đang ở; sau khi đến, y thưa với Đức Thế Tôn: “Bạch Thế Tôn, xin Đức Thế Tôn hãy nhập Niết Bàn! Xin Thiện Thệ hãy nhập Niết Bàn!
Parinibbānakālo dāni, bhante, bhagavato.
It is time for the Blessed One’s parinibbāna, Venerable Sir.
Bạch Thế Tôn, đã đến lúc Đức Thế Tôn nhập Niết Bàn rồi.
Bhāsitā kho panesā, bhante, bhagavatā vācā – ‘na tāvāhaṃ, pāpima, parinibbāyissāmi yāva me bhikkhū na sāvakā bhavissanti viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā sāmīcippaṭipannā anudhammacārino, sakaṃ ācariyakaṃ uggahetvā ācikkhissanti desessanti paññapessanti paṭṭhapessanti vivarissanti vibhajissanti uttānīkarissanti* , uppannaṃ parappavādaṃ sahadhammena suniggahitaṃ niggahetvā sappāṭihāriyaṃ dhammaṃ desessantī’’’ti.
For this statement, Venerable Sir, was made by the Blessed One: ‘I will not attain parinibbāna yet, Evil One, until my bhikkhus are disciples who are accomplished, disciplined, confident, learned, upholders of the Dhamma, practitioners in accordance with the Dhamma, practitioners of proper conduct, followers of the Dhamma, who, having learned their own teacher’s doctrine, will teach, expound, declare, establish, clarify, analyze, and make it plain, and having thoroughly refuted any arisen opposing doctrines in accordance with the Dhamma, will teach the Dhamma with a marvel.’”
Bạch Thế Tôn, Đức Thế Tôn đã từng tuyên bố lời này: ‘Này Ác ma, Ta sẽ không nhập Niết Bàn chừng nào các Tỳ khưu đệ tử của Ta chưa trở thành những người khéo léo, khéo điều phục, tự tin, đa văn, giữ gìn Chánh pháp, thực hành đúng Chánh pháp, thực hành đúng đắn, sống đúng Pháp, tự mình nắm giữ giáo lý của bậc Đạo sư, thuyết giảng, trình bày, chỉ rõ, thiết lập, khai mở, phân tích, làm cho dễ hiểu, và sau khi bác bỏ một quan điểm sai lầm của người khác bằng Chánh pháp một cách khéo léo, sẽ thuyết giảng Chánh pháp có thần thông.’”

Santi kho pana, bhante, etarahi bhikkhū bhagavato sāvakā viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā sāmīcippaṭipannā anudhammacārino, sakaṃ ācariyakaṃ uggahetvā ācikkhanti desenti paññapenti paṭṭhapenti vivaranti vibhajanti uttānīkaronti, uppannaṃ parappavādaṃ sahadhammena suniggahitaṃ niggahetvā sappāṭihāriyaṃ dhammaṃ desenti.
Indeed, Venerable Sir, there are now bhikkhus, disciples of the Blessed One, who are accomplished, disciplined, confident, learned, upholders of the Dhamma, practitioners in accordance with the Dhamma, practitioners of proper conduct, followers of the Dhamma, who, having learned their own teacher’s doctrine, teach, expound, declare, establish, clarify, analyze, and make it plain, and having thoroughly refuted any arisen opposing doctrines in accordance with the Dhamma, teach the Dhamma with a marvel.
Bạch Thế Tôn, hiện nay có những Tỳ khưu đệ tử của Đức Thế Tôn đã khéo léo, khéo điều phục, tự tin, đa văn, giữ gìn Chánh pháp, thực hành đúng Chánh pháp, thực hành đúng đắn, sống đúng Pháp, tự mình nắm giữ giáo lý của bậc Đạo sư, thuyết giảng, trình bày, chỉ rõ, thiết lập, khai mở, phân tích, làm cho dễ hiểu, và sau khi bác bỏ một quan điểm sai lầm của người khác bằng Chánh pháp một cách khéo léo, sẽ thuyết giảng Chánh pháp có thần thông.
Parinibbātu dāni, bhante, bhagavā, parinibbātu dāni, sugato!
May the Blessed One now attain parinibbāna, Venerable Sir; may the Fortunate One now attain parinibbāna!
Bạch Thế Tôn, xin Đức Thế Tôn hãy nhập Niết Bàn! Xin Thiện Thệ hãy nhập Niết Bàn!
Parinibbānakālo dāni, bhante, bhagavato.
It is time for the Blessed One’s parinibbāna, Venerable Sir.
Bạch Thế Tôn, đã đến lúc Đức Thế Tôn nhập Niết Bàn rồi.

‘‘Bhāsitā kho panesā, bhante, bhagavatā vācā – ‘na tāvāhaṃ, pāpima, parinibbāyissāmi yāva me bhikkhuniyo na sāvikā bhavissanti viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā sāmīcippaṭipannā anudhammacāriniyo, sakaṃ ācariyakaṃ uggahetvā ācikkhissanti desessanti paññapessanti paṭṭhapessanti vivarissanti vibhajissanti uttānīkarissanti, uppannaṃ parappavādaṃ sahadhammena suniggahitaṃ niggahetvā sappāṭihāriyaṃ dhammaṃ desessantī’’’ti.
“For this statement, Venerable Sir, was made by the Blessed One: ‘I will not attain parinibbāna yet, Evil One, until my bhikkhunīs are disciples who are accomplished, disciplined, confident, learned, upholders of the Dhamma, practitioners in accordance with the Dhamma, practitioners of proper conduct, followers of the Dhamma, who, having learned their own teacher’s doctrine, will teach, expound, declare, establish, clarify, analyze, and make it plain, and having thoroughly refuted any arisen opposing doctrines in accordance with the Dhamma, will teach the Dhamma with a marvel.’”
“Bạch Thế Tôn, Đức Thế Tôn đã từng tuyên bố lời này: ‘Này Ác ma, Ta sẽ không nhập Niết Bàn chừng nào các Tỳ khưu ni đệ tử của Ta chưa trở thành những người khéo léo, khéo điều phục, tự tin, đa văn, giữ gìn Chánh pháp, thực hành đúng Chánh pháp, thực hành đúng đắn, sống đúng Pháp, tự mình nắm giữ giáo lý của bậc Đạo sư, thuyết giảng, trình bày, chỉ rõ, thiết lập, khai mở, phân tích, làm cho dễ hiểu, và sau khi bác bỏ một quan điểm sai lầm của người khác bằng Chánh pháp một cách khéo léo, sẽ thuyết giảng Chánh pháp có thần thông.’”

Parinibbātu dāni, bhante, bhagavā, parinibbātu dāni, sugato!
May the Blessed One now attain parinibbāna, Venerable Sir; may the Fortunate One now attain parinibbāna!
Bạch Thế Tôn, xin Đức Thế Tôn hãy nhập Niết Bàn! Xin Thiện Thệ hãy nhập Niết Bàn!

“For this statement, Venerable Sir, was made by the Blessed One: ‘I will not attain parinibbāna yet, Evil One, until my male lay followers… until my female lay followers are disciples who are accomplished, disciplined, confident, learned, upholders of the Dhamma, practitioners in accordance with the Dhamma, practitioners of proper conduct, followers of the Dhamma, who, having learned their own teacher’s doctrine, will teach, expound, declare, establish, clarify, analyze, and make it plain, and having thoroughly refuted any arisen opposing doctrines in accordance with the Dhamma, will teach the Dhamma with a marvel.’”

‘‘Santi kho pana, bhante, etarahi upāsakā…pe… upāsikā bhagavato sāvikā viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā sāmīcippaṭipannā anudhammacāriniyo, sakaṃ ācariyakaṃ uggahetvā ācikkhanti desenti paññapenti paṭṭhapenti vivaranti vibhajanti uttānīkaronti, uppannaṃ parappavādaṃ sahadhammena suniggahitaṃ niggahetvā sappāṭihāriyaṃ dhammaṃ desenti.
Indeed, Venerable Sir, there are now male lay followers… female lay followers, disciples of the Blessed One, who are accomplished, disciplined, confident, learned, upholders of the Dhamma, practitioners in accordance with the Dhamma, practitioners of proper conduct, followers of the Dhamma, who, having learned their own teacher’s doctrine, teach, expound, declare, establish, clarify, analyze, and make it plain, and having thoroughly refuted any arisen opposing doctrines in accordance with the Dhamma, teach the Dhamma with a marvel.

‘‘Bhāsitā kho panesā, bhante, bhagavatā vācā – ‘na tāvāhaṃ, pāpima, parinibbāyissāmi yāva me idaṃ brahmacariyaṃ na iddhañceva bhavissati phītañca vitthāritaṃ bāhujaññaṃ puthubhūtaṃ yāva devamanussehi suppakāsita’nti.
“For this statement, Venerable Sir, was made by the Blessed One: ‘I will not attain parinibbāna yet, Evil One, until this holy life of mine is prosperous and flourishing, widespread, well-known, and proclaimed among devas and humans.’”

And now, Venerable Sir, this holy life of the Blessed One is prosperous and flourishing, widespread, well-known, and proclaimed among devas and humans.

When this was said, the Blessed One said to Māra, the Evil One: “Be at ease, Evil One.

Na ciraṃ* tathāgatassa parinibbānaṃ bhavissati.
The Tathāgata’s parinibbāna will not be long.

Ito tiṇṇaṃ māsānaṃ accayena tathāgato parinibbāyissatī’’ti.
In three months from now, the Tathāgata will attain parinibbāna.”

Atha kho bhagavā cāpāle cetiye sato sampajāno āyusaṅkhāraṃ ossaji.
Then the Blessed One, mindful and clearly comprehending, renounced the life-span at the Cāpāla Cetiya.

And when the Blessed One renounced the life-span, a great, terrifying, hair-raising earthquake occurred, and the devas’ drums cracked.

Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to me: ‘Here, a bhikkhu develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to zeal and volitional formations (chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ); thus my zeal will not be too slack, nor too tense, nor contracted internally, nor scattered externally.

“When these four bases of spiritual power have been developed and cultivated in this way, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu experiences various kinds of spiritual power: being one, he becomes many; being many, he becomes one; he appears and vanishes; he goes unimpeded through walls, through ramparts, through mountains, as if through space; he dives in and out of the earth as if in water; he walks on water without sinking as if on land; he travels cross-legged through space like a winged bird; he touches and strokes with his hand even the moon and sun, so mighty and powerful; he exercises mastery with his body even as far as the Brahma world.

“When these four bases of spiritual power have been developed and cultivated in this way, bhikkhus, with the divine ear element, purified and surpassing that of humans, he hears both kinds of sounds, divine and human, those that are far and those that are near.

He understands a mind with passion as ‘a mind with passion’; a mind without passion as ‘a mind without passion’; a mind with hatred as ‘a mind with hatred’; a mind without hatred as ‘a mind without hatred’; a mind with delusion as ‘a mind with delusion’; a mind without delusion as ‘a mind without delusion’; a contracted mind as ‘a contracted mind’; a distracted mind as ‘a distracted mind’; a developed mind as ‘a developed mind’; an undeveloped mind as ‘an undeveloped mind’; a surpassable mind as ‘a surpassable mind’; an unsurpassable mind as ‘an unsurpassable mind’; a concentrated mind as ‘a concentrated mind’; an unconcentrated mind as ‘an unconcentrated mind’; a liberated mind as ‘a liberated mind’; an unliberated mind as ‘an unliberated mind’.

“When these four bases of spiritual power have been developed and cultivated in this way, bhikkhus, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing that of humans, he sees beings passing away and being reborn, inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate, and he understands how beings fare according to their kamma: ‘These beings, venerable sirs, who were endowed with misconduct of body, speech, and mind, who reviled the Noble Ones, who held wrong views and acquired kamma based on wrong views, with the breakup of the body, after death, have been reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.

Or, Venerables, these beings are endowed with good bodily conduct, good verbal conduct, and good mental conduct; they do not disparage the Noble Ones; they have right view, and they undertake actions based on right view. After the dissolution of the body, beyond death, they reappear in a good destination, a heavenly world.
Hoặc này chư hiền giả, những chúng sinh này đầy đủ thân thiện hạnh, đầy đủ khẩu thiện hạnh, đầy đủ ý thiện hạnh, không phỉ báng các bậc Thánh, có chánh kiến, thực hành các nghiệp theo chánh kiến; sau khi thân hoại mạng chung, họ tái sinh vào cõi thiện, cõi trời.
Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe, sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajānāti.
Thus, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing that of humans, he sees beings passing away and reappearing, inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, well-destined and ill-destined, he understands beings according to their kamma.

And how, bhikkhus, are the four bases of psychic power developed and frequently practiced so as to be of great fruit and great benefit?
Này các Tỷ-kheo, bốn căn bản thần thông này được tu tập như thế nào, được làm cho sung mãn như thế nào mà có quả lớn, có lợi ích lớn?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti – ‘iti me chando na ca atilīno bhavissati, na ca atippaggahito bhavissati, na ca ajjhattaṃ saṃkhitto bhavissati, na ca bahiddhā vikkhitto bhavissati’.
Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to desire and volitional formations of exertion – ‘My desire shall not be too slack, nor too tense; it shall not be inwardly constrained, nor outwardly scattered.’

He abides perceiving what is before and after – as before, so after; as after, so before; as below, so above; as above, so below; as by day, so by night; as by night, so by day.

He generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the non-arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states.

He generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the maintenance, non-disappearance, increase, fullness, development, and perfection of arisen wholesome states.

826. Thus have I heard: On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling in Sāvatthī, at the Eastern Park, in Migāra’s Mother’s Palace.

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhū heṭṭhāmigāramātupāsāde viharanti uddhatā unnaḷā capalā mukharā vikiṇṇavācā muṭṭhassatino asampajānā asamāhitā bhantacittā* pākatindriyā.
Now, at that time, numerous bhikkhus were dwelling in the lower part of Migāramātupāsāda, agitated, arrogant, fickle, garrulous, scattered in speech, forgetful of mindfulness, without full awareness, unfocused, bewildered in mind, with uncontrolled faculties.

Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ āmantesi – ‘‘ete kho, moggallāna, sabrahmacārino heṭṭhāmigāramātupāsāde viharanti uddhatā unnaḷā capalā mukharā vikiṇṇavācā muṭṭhassatino asampajānā asamāhitā bhantacittā pākatindriyā.
Then the Blessed One addressed Venerable Mahāmoggallāna: “Moggallāna, these fellow monastics are dwelling in the lower part of Migāramātupāsāda, agitated, arrogant, fickle, garrulous, scattered in speech, forgetful of mindfulness, without full awareness, unfocused, bewildered in mind, with uncontrolled faculties.

‘‘Evaṃ, bhante’’ti kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavato paṭissutvā tathārūpaṃ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṃ abhisaṅkhāresi* yathā pādaṅguṭṭhakena migāramātupāsādaṃ saṅkampesi sampakampesi sampacālesi.
“Yes, Venerable Sir,” replied Venerable Mahāmoggallāna to the Blessed One, and he performed such a feat of psychic power that he made the Migāramātupāsāda tremble, shake, and quake with his big toe.
“Vâng, bạch Ngài,” Tôn giả Mahāmoggallāna vâng lời Đức Thế Tôn rồi thực hiện một thần thông biến hóa như sau: với ngón chân cái, ngài làm cho lâu đài Migāramātā rung chuyển, chấn động, và lắc lư.

Then those bhikkhus, agitated and with their hair standing on end, stood to one side, thinking: “It is astonishing, sirs, it is truly wonderful, sirs!

Then the Blessed One approached those bhikkhus; having approached, the Blessed One said to those bhikkhus: “Why, bhikkhus, are you agitated, with your hair standing on end, standing to one side?”

“Bhikkhus, it was the bhikkhu Moggallāna who, wishing to shake you up, made the Migāramātupāsāda tremble, shake, and quake with his big toe.

What do you think, bhikkhus? By the development and cultivation of which dhammas is the bhikkhu Moggallāna of such great psychic power, of such great majesty?”

‘‘Bhagavaṃmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā, bhagavaṃnettikā bhagavaṃpaṭisaraṇā.
“Venerable Sir, our dhammas have the Blessed One as their root, the Blessed One as their guide, the Blessed One as their refuge.

Having heard from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will remember it.”

It is by the development and cultivation of four bases of psychic power that the bhikkhu Moggallāna is of such great psychic power, of such great majesty.

Here, bhikkhus, the bhikkhu Moggallāna develops the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to desire and volitional formations of striving, the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to energy…the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to mind…the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to investigation and volitional formations of striving – ‘Thus my investigation will be neither too lax nor too strained; it will be neither inwardly restricted nor outwardly dispersed.’

Pacchāpuresaññī ca viharati – yathā pure tathā pacchā, yathā pacchā tathā pure; yathā adho tathā uddhaṃ yathā uddhaṃ tathā adho; yathā divā tathā rattiṃ, yathā rattiṃ tathā divā.
He dwells perceiving front and back – as front, so back; as back, so front; as below, so above; as above, so below; as day, so night; as night, so day.

Iti vivaṭena cetasā apariyonaddhena sappabhāsaṃ cittaṃ bhāveti.
Thus, with an open and unconstrained mind, he develops a mind endowed with radiance.

It is by the development and cultivation of these four bases of psychic power that the bhikkhu Moggallāna is of such great psychic power, of such great majesty.

Imesañca pana, bhikkhave, catunnaṃ iddhipādānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu anekavihitaṃ iddhividhaṃ paccanubhoti…pe… yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṃ vatteti…pe… imesañca pana, bhikkhave, catunnaṃ iddhipādānaṃ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā moggallāno bhikkhu āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī’’ti.
And furthermore, bhikkhus, by the development and cultivation of these four bases of psychic power, the bhikkhu Moggallāna experiences various kinds of psychic power… and exercises mastery with his body even as far as the Brahma-world… And furthermore, bhikkhus, by the development and cultivation of these four bases of psychic power, the bhikkhu Moggallāna, by the destruction of the āsavas, enters and abides in the stainless liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, having realized it for himself with direct knowledge in this very life.”

Sitting to one side, the brāhmin Uṇṇābha said to Venerable Ānanda: “For what purpose, good Ānanda, is the holy life lived under the recluse Gotama?”

‘‘Evameva kho, brāhmaṇa, yo so bhikkhu arahaṃ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṃyojano sammadaññā vimutto, tassa yo pubbe chando ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte* yo tajjo chando so paṭippassaddho; yaṃ pubbe vīriyaṃ ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yaṃ tajjaṃ vīriyaṃ taṃ paṭippassaddhaṃ; yaṃ pubbe cittaṃ ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yaṃ tajjaṃ cittaṃ taṃ paṭippassaddhaṃ; yā pubbe vīmaṃsā ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yā tajjā vīmaṃsā sā paṭippassaddhā.
“Even so, brahmin, for that bhikkhu who is an Arahant, whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, attained his own goal, whose fetters of existence are utterly destroyed, who is liberated by perfect knowledge—the desire he formerly had for the attainment of arahantship, that desire has subsided upon the attainment of arahantship; the energy he formerly had for the attainment of arahantship, that energy has subsided upon the attainment of arahantship; the mind he formerly had for the attainment of arahantship, that mind has subsided upon the attainment of arahantship; the investigation he formerly had for the attainment of arahantship, that investigation has subsided upon the attainment of arahantship.

Seyyathāpi, bho ānanda, nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya – cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantīti; evamevaṃ bhotā ānandena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.
It is as if, Venerable Ānanda, one were to set upright what was overturned, or to reveal what was hidden, or to show the way to one who was lost, or to hold up a lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes could see forms; in the same way has the Dhamma been made clear by Venerable Ānanda in many ways.
Ví như, thưa Tôn giả Ānanda, lật ngửa cái bị úp xuống, mở ra cái bị che đậy, chỉ đường cho người lạc lối, hay cầm đèn dầu trong bóng tối để những người có mắt có thể thấy các sắc pháp; cũng vậy, Chánh pháp đã được Tôn giả Ānanda thuyết giảng bằng nhiều phương cách.

I go for refuge to that Blessed Gotama, Venerable Ānanda, and to the Dhamma and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus.

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to desire and volitional formations of exertion; he develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to energy... and so on... concentration due to mind... and so on... concentration due to investigation and volitional formations of exertion.

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu experiences various kinds of supernormal powers: being one, he becomes many; being many, he becomes one…pe… he exercises mastery with his body even as far as the Brahma-world — this, bhikkhus, is called supernormal power.

It is this Noble Eightfold Path, that is: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration — this, bhikkhus, is called the path leading to the development of the base for spiritual power.”

He develops the base for spiritual power endowed with concentration due to energy…pe… the concentration due to mind…pe… the concentration due to investigation and volitional formations, thinking: ‘My investigation will not be too slack, nor will it be too strained; it will not be inwardly constricted, nor will it be outwardly distracted.’

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu reviews this very body, from the soles of the feet upwards, from the tips of the hair downwards, enclosed in skin, full of various kinds of impurities: ‘In this body there are hair of the head, body-hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, bone-marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, intestines, intestinal membranes, stomach, excrement, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, mucus, joint-fluid, urine.’

Here, bhikkhus, whatever modes, signs, or indications a bhikkhu uses to develop the base of psychic power endowed with chanda-samādhi-ppadhāna-saṅkhāra during the day, he uses those same modes, signs, or indications to develop the base of psychic power endowed with chanda-samādhi-ppadhāna-saṅkhāra during the night. Or, whatever modes, signs, or indications he uses to develop the base of psychic power endowed with chanda-samādhi-ppadhāna-saṅkhāra during the night, he uses those same modes, signs, or indications to develop the base of psychic power endowed with chanda-samādhi-ppadhāna-saṅkhāra during the day.

Through the development and cultivation of these four bases of spiritual power, one of two fruits is to be expected by a bhikkhu: direct knowledge in this very life, or, if there is still a remnant of clinging, non-returning.

Diṭṭheva dhamme paṭikacca* aññaṃ ārādheti no ce diṭṭheva dhamme paṭikacca aññaṃ ārādheti; atha maraṇakāle aññaṃ ārādheti, no ce diṭṭheva dhamme paṭikacca aññaṃ ārādheti, no ce maraṇakāle aññaṃ ārādheti; atha pañcannaṃ orambhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā antarāparinibbāyī hoti, upahaccaparinibbāyī hoti, asaṅkhāraparinibbāyī hoti, sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī hoti, uddhaṃsoto hoti akaniṭṭhagāmī.
In this very life, beforehand, he achieves final knowledge. If he does not achieve final knowledge in this very life, beforehand, then he achieves final knowledge at the time of death. If he does not achieve final knowledge in this very life, beforehand, nor at the time of death; then, with the destruction of the five lower fetters, he becomes an antarāparinibbāyī, an upahaccaparinibbāyī, an asaṅkhāraparinibbāyī, a sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī, or an uddhaṃsoto akaniṭṭhagāmī.
Trong đời hiện tại, vị ấy nỗ lực thực hành trước khi chết và thành tựu trí tuệ (quả A-la-hán). Here, bhikkhus, Bhikkhu Moggallāna cultivates the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to desire and the volitional formations of exertion, thinking: ‘My desire will not be too slack, nor too over-strained; it will not be inwardly contracted, nor outwardly scattered.’

Furthermore, bhikkhus, it is by the cultivation and repeated practice of these four bases of psychic power that Bhikkhu Moggallāna, through the destruction of the taints (āsavas), by himself realizes directly, in this very life, and entering upon it, abides in the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom.”

Furthermore, bhikkhus, it is by the cultivation and repeated practice of these four bases of psychic power that the Tathāgata, through the destruction of the taints, by himself realizes directly, in this very life, and entering upon it, abides in the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom.”
Này các Tỳ-khưu, Như Lai, do tu tập, làm cho sung mãn bốn căn bản thần thông này, do sự đoạn tận các lậu hoặc (āsava), tự mình với thắng trí (abhiññā) chứng ngộ, an trú và đạt được giải thoát tâm (cetovimutti) và giải thoát tuệ (paññāvimutti) không lậu hoặc ngay trong hiện tại."
