When asked the question, explained the Kamma of which this was the fruit.

‘‘When I was a human being among humans, I was a slave in a household, serving others.

This is not for those who have not done good deeds, but for those who have done good deeds;

Asokaṃ nandanaṃ rammaṃ, tidasānaṃ mahāvanaṃ.
The sorrowless, delightful, charming great forest of the Tāvatiṃsa gods.

‘‘Sukhaṃ akatapuññānaṃ, idha natthi parattha ca;
For those who have not done good deeds, there is no happiness here or hereafter;

Sukhañca katapuññānaṃ, idha ceva parattha ca.
But for those who have done good deeds, there is happiness both here and hereafter.

‘‘Tesaṃ sahabyakāmānaṃ, kattabbaṃ kusalaṃ bahuṃ;
For those who desire their companionship, much wholesome Kamma should be done;

Illuminating all directions, like a star of medicinal herbs.

A female lay follower of Gotama, the renowned, the one with vision.

‘‘Tena metādiso vaṇṇo…pe… vaṇṇo ca me sabbadisā pabhāsatīti.
‘Therefore, my complexion is such… and my complexion shines in all directions.’

‘‘Mama ca, bhante, vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vandeyyāsi – ‘lakhumā nāma,bhante,upāsikā bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ti.
‘And, venerable sir, by my words, you should bow your head at the feet of the Blessed One—saying: “Venerable sir, the female lay follower named Lakhumā bows her head at the feet of the Blessed One.” It is not surprising, venerable sir, that the Blessed One would declare my attainment of some fruit of recluseship. The Blessed One declared her attainment of the fruit of Sakadāgāmī.’

Anacchariyaṃ kho panetaṃ, bhante, yaṃ maṃ bhagavā aññatarasmiṃ sāmaññaphale byākareyya* .
‘And, venerable sir, by my words, you should bow your head at the feet of the Blessed One—saying: “Venerable sir, the female lay follower named Lakhumā bows her head at the feet of the Blessed One.” It is not surprising, venerable sir, that the Blessed One would declare my attainment of some fruit of recluseship. The Blessed One declared her attainment of the fruit of Sakadāgāmī.’

who, with a trusting heart and her own hands, gave you rice-gruel;

Parābhatena dānena, ijjhittha vata dakkhiṇā.
Truly, the offering made with a gift brought from another’s house has been perfected!

‘‘Yā mahesittaṃ kāreyya, cakkavattissa rājino;
That which would make a chief queen for a Wheel-turning Monarch,

a woman beautiful in all her limbs, always pleasing to her husband;

A hundred nikkhas, a hundred horses, a hundred chariots drawn by mules;

Sataṃ kaññāsahassāni, āmuttamaṇikuṇḍalā;
a hundred thousand maidens, adorned with jeweled earrings;

‘‘Sataṃ hemavatā nāgā, īsādantā urūḷhavā;
A hundred elephants from Himālaya, with tusks like plough-poles, mighty,

Suvaṇṇakacchā mātaṅgā, hemakappanavāsasā* ;
elephants with golden trappings, wearing golden coverings;

“O Caṇḍālī, worship the feet of the glorious Gotama!

Purify your mind towards the Arahant, the Imperturbable;

Khippaṃ pañjalikā vanda, parittaṃ tava jīvita’’nti.
quickly, with clasped hands, worship, for your life is short.”
Hãy nhanh chóng chắp tay đảnh lễ, vì mạng sống của con còn ít ỏi.”
Coditā bhāvitattena, sarīrantimadhārinā;
Urged by the one whose mind was developed, who bore his final body,

Tamenaṃ avadhī gāvī, caṇḍāliṃ pañjaliṃ ṭhitaṃ;
Then a cow gored that Caṇḍālī, as she stood with clasped hands,

Namassamānaṃ sambuddhaṃ, andhakāre pabhaṅkaranti.
worshipping the Fully Enlightened One, the bringer of light in darkness.

‘‘Khīṇāsavaṃ vigatarajaṃ anejaṃ, ekaṃ araññamhi raho nisinnaṃ;
“One whose defilements are destroyed, who is free from dust, who is tranquil, alone, seated in solitude in the forest;
“Bậc đã đoạn trừ các lậu hoặc, đã lìa bụi trần, không còn tham ái, đang độc cư trong rừng;
Deviddhipattā upasaṅkamitvā, vandāmi taṃ vīra mahānubhāva’’nti.
having attained divine power, I approach and worship you, O hero of great might!”

‘‘Suvaṇṇavaṇṇā jalitā mahāyasā, vimānamoruyha anekacittā;
“Golden-hued, radiant, of great renown, having descended from your mansion with many thoughts;
“Hỡi thiên nữ dung sắc vàng rực rỡ, uy lực lớn, với nhiều tâm ý khác nhau, từ thiên cung giáng xuống;
Parivāritā accharāsaṅgaṇena* , kā tvaṃ subhe devate vandase mama’’nti.
surrounded by a host of nymphs, who are you, O beautiful deva, who worships me?”

‘‘Ahaṃ bhaddante caṇḍālī, tayā vīrena* pesitā;
“Venerable sir, I am the Caṇḍālī, urged by you, the Elder;
“Thưa Tôn giả đáng kính, tôi là nữ Caṇḍālī, được ngài, bậc anh hùng, sai bảo;
Vandiṃ arahato pāde, gotamassa yasassino.
I worshipped the feet of the Arahant, the glorious Gotama.
Tôi đã đảnh lễ dưới chân Đức Gotama vinh quang, bậc A-la-hán.
‘‘Sāhaṃ vanditvā* pādāni, cutā caṇḍālayoniyā;
Having worshipped his feet, I passed away from the Caṇḍālī birth;
Sau khi đảnh lễ dưới chân Ngài, tôi đã chết từ kiếp Caṇḍāla;
Vimānaṃ sabbato bhaddaṃ, upapannamhi nandane.
I was reborn in a mansion, auspicious in every way, in Nandana.
Và đã tái sanh vào một thiên cung tốt lành toàn diện trên cõi Nandana.
Tāsāhaṃ pavarā seṭṭhā, vaṇṇena yasasāyunā.
among them, I am the foremost, the best, in beauty, renown, and lifespan.

‘‘Pahūtakatakalyāṇā, sampajānā paṭissatā* ;
I had performed abundant good deeds, I was discerning and mindful;

Venerable sir, I have come to worship you, the compassionate sage in the world.”

Idaṃ vatvāna caṇḍālī, kataññū katavedinī;
Having said this, the Caṇḍālī, grateful and acknowledging kindness,
Nói xong lời ấy, nữ Caṇḍālī, người biết ơn và đền ơn;
Vanditvā arahato pāde, tatthevantaradhāyathāti* .
having worshipped the feet of the Arahant, vanished right there.
Sau khi đảnh lễ dưới chân bậc A-la-hán, liền biến mất ngay tại đó.
‘‘Nīlā pītā ca kāḷā ca, mañjiṭṭhā* atha lohitā;
“Blue, yellow, black, crimson, and also red;
“Xanh, vàng, đen, đỏ thẫm, và cả đỏ tươi;
Nayime aññesu kāyesu, rukkhā santi sumedhase.
these trees, O wise deva, do not exist in other realms.
Này thiên nữ trí tuệ, những cây này không có ở các cõi khác.
Devate pucchitācikkha, kissa kammassidaṃ phala’’nti.
Tell me, when asked, O deva, of what kamma is this the fruit?”

‘‘Bhadditthikāti* maṃ aññaṃsu, kimilāyaṃ upāsikā;
In the town called Kimila, people knew me as the laywoman Bhadditthi.

Saddhā sīlena sampannā, saṃvibhāgaratā sadā.
I was endowed with faith and sīla, and always delighted in sharing.

‘‘Acchādanañca bhattañca, senāsanaṃ padīpiyaṃ;
Clothing and food, lodging and lamps,

Far removed from stealing, sexual misconduct, and intoxicating drinks.
Tránh xa trộm cắp, tà hạnh, và rượu bia.
‘‘Pañcasikkhāpade ratā, ariyasaccāna kovidā;
Delighting in the five precepts, skilled in the Noble Truths,
Tôi hoan hỷ trong năm giới, thông hiểu các Chân lý cao thượng;
Upāsikā cakkhumato, appamādavihārinī.
I was a laywoman of the Seer, dwelling with diligence.
Là một nữ cư sĩ của bậc có nhãn quan, sống không phóng dật.
Katāvāsā katakusalā tato cutā* ,
Having created the opportunity, having done good deeds, departed from there,
Đã tạo cơ hội, đã tạo phước báu, sau khi chết từ đó,
‘‘Bhikkhū cāhaṃ paramahitānukampake, abhojayiṃ tapassiyugaṃ mahāmuniṃ;
I fed bhikkhus who were compassionate for the highest welfare, and the great sage, the pair of ascetics.
“Tôi đã cúng dường các Tỳ-kheo, những bậc đại ẩn sĩ, những vị đại hiền giả, những người có lòng từ bi vì lợi ích tối thượng.
Katāvāsā katakusalā tato cutā* , sayaṃ pabhā anuvicarāmi nandanaṃ.
Having created the opportunity, having done good deeds, departed from there, I wander in Nandana, shining with my own radiance.
Tôi đã tạo nghiệp lành, sau khi chết từ đó, tự mình tỏa sáng, tôi đi khắp cõi Nandana.
‘‘Aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ aparimitaṃ sukhāvahaṃ, uposathaṃ satatamupāvasiṃ ahaṃ;
I constantly observed the immeasurable, happiness-bringing Uposatha, endowed with eight factors.
Tôi đã luôn giữ giới Bát quan trai, tám chi phần, vô lượng, mang lại an lạc.
Katāvāsā katakusalā tato cutā* , sayaṃ pabhā anuvicarāmi nandana’’nti.
Having created the opportunity, having done good deeds, departed from there, I wander in Nandana, shining with my own radiance.”
Tôi đã tạo nghiệp lành, sau khi chết từ đó, tự mình tỏa sáng, tôi đi khắp cõi Nandana.”
‘‘Abhikkantena vaṇṇena, yā tvaṃ tiṭṭhasi devate;
“O deity, with your exceedingly beautiful complexion,
“Này thiên nữ, với vẻ đẹp rực rỡ, cô đang đứng đây,
Obhāsentī disā sabbā, osadhī viya tārakā.
You illuminate all directions, like the morning star.
chiếu sáng khắp mọi phương, như sao Thốc-tú.
‘‘Pucchāmi taṃ devi mahānubhāve, manussabhūtā kimakāsi puññaṃ;
O deity of great power, I ask you: What good deed did you do when you were a human?
Này thiên nữ đại thần lực, tôi hỏi cô, khi còn là người, cô đã làm phước gì?
Kenāsi evaṃ jalitānubhāvā, vaṇṇo ca te sabbadisā pabhāsatī’’ti.
By what means do you shine with such power, and your radiance illuminates all directions?”
Do nhân gì cô có thần lực rực rỡ như vậy, và sắc đẹp của cô chiếu sáng khắp mọi phương?”
Sā devatā attamanā, moggallānena pucchitā;
That deity, delighted, being questioned by Moggallāna,
Vị thiên nữ ấy hoan hỷ, được Moggallāna hỏi,
‘‘Soṇadinnāti maṃ aññaṃsu, nāḷandāyaṃ upāsikā;
“In Nāḷandā, people knew me as the laywoman Soṇadinnā.
“Khi còn là người ở Nāḷandā, người ta biết tôi là Soṇadinnā,
Saddhā sīlena sampannā, saṃvibhāgaratā sadā.
I was endowed with faith and sīla, and always delighted in sharing.
có đức tin, đầy đủ giới hạnh, luôn hoan hỷ với sự chia sẻ.
‘‘Acchādanañca bhattañca, senāsanaṃ padīpiyaṃ;
Clothing and food, lodging and lamps,
Tôi đã cúng dường y phục, thực phẩm, chỗ ở và đèn dầu,
‘‘Cātuddasiṃ pañcadasiṃ, yā ca pakkhassa aṭṭhamī;
On the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
Ngày mười bốn, ngày rằm, và ngày mùng tám của mỗi nửa tháng,
Pāṭihāriyapakkhañca, aṭṭhaṅgasusamāgataṃ.
And on the special fortnight's day, endowed with eight factors,
và ngày Uposatha đặc biệt, đầy đủ tám chi phần.
‘‘Uposathaṃ upavasissaṃ, sadā sīlesu saṃvutā;
I observed the Uposatha, always restrained by sīla.
Tôi đã giữ giới Uposatha, luôn giữ gìn giới hạnh;
Saññamā saṃvibhāgā ca, vimānaṃ āvasāmahaṃ.
Through self-restraint and sharing, I now dwell in this celestial mansion.
Do sự tự chế và chia sẻ, tôi sống trong thiên cung.
‘‘Pāṇātipātā viratā, musāvādā ca saññatā;
I abstained from taking life, and was restrained from false speech,

Saddhā sīlena sampannā, saṃvibhāgaratā sadā.

“Having heard of Nandana repeatedly, a desire arose in me;
“Thường xuyên nghe về Nandana, tôi đã khởi lên niềm mong muốn;
Tattha cittaṃ paṇidhāya, upapannamhi nandanaṃ.
Having set my mind on that, I was reborn in Nandana.
Với tâm nguyện hướng về đó, tôi đã tái sinh vào Nandana.”
‘‘Nākāsiṃ satthu vacanaṃ, buddhassādiccabandhuno;
“I did not follow the word of the Teacher, the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun;
“Tôi đã không làm theo lời dạy của Đức Đạo Sư, Đức Phật, thân quyến của mặt trời;
Hīne cittaṃ paṇidhāya, sāmhi pacchānutāpinī’’ti.
Having set my mind on what is inferior, I am remorseful afterwards.”
Vì đã nguyện tâm vào cõi thấp kém, tôi hối tiếc về sau.”
‘‘Kīva ciraṃ vimānamhi, idha vacchasuposathe* ;
“How long, O Uposathā, will you dwell here in this celestial mansion?
“Này thiên nữ Uposathā, cô sẽ ở trong thiên cung này bao lâu?
Devate pucchitācikkha, yadi jānāsi āyuno’’ti.
O deity, tell me, being asked, if you know your lifespan.”
Này thiên nữ, nếu cô biết tuổi thọ của mình, hãy cho tôi biết khi được hỏi.”
‘‘Saṭṭhivassasahassāni* , tisso ca vassakoṭiyo;
“For sixty thousand years, and three crores of years;
“Này đại hiền giả, tôi sẽ ở đây sáu mươi ngàn năm, và ba trăm triệu năm;
Idha ṭhatvā mahāmuni, ito cutā gamissāmi;
Having stayed here, great sage, I shall depart from this place,
Từ đây chết đi, tôi sẽ đi đến;
‘‘Mā tvaṃ uposathe bhāyi, sambuddhenāsi byākatā;
“Do not fear, O Uposathā, you have been declared by the Perfectly Awakened One;
“Này Uposathā, cô đừng sợ hãi, cô đã được Đức Chánh Đẳng Giác tuyên bố;
Sotāpannā visesayi, pahīnā tava duggatī’’ti.
You have attained distinction as a Sotāpanna; your bad destinations are eliminated.”
Là một bậc Dự lưu, cô sẽ thăng tiến, ác thú của cô đã bị đoạn trừ.”
