One who desires a son should (seek) a young woman, one who desires royal service should (seek) those who come (to the king).

Neither food, nor garlands, perfumes, or ointments;

Nor clothes and all adornments, should one use like a king.

"The king is not my friend, the king is not my equal;"

"He is my master"—one should fix this thought in mind.

A servant should avoid these six faults, and stand restrained like fire.

Na pacchato na purato, nāpi āsannadūrato;

Not behind, nor in front, nor too near or too far;

Chớ đứng phía sau, chớ đứng phía trước, cũng chớ quá gần hay quá xa;

Na kacche nopi paṭivāte, na cāpi oṇatuṇṇate;

Not in the armpit, nor against the wind, nor on uneven ground;

Chớ đứng nơi có gió hay ngược gió, cũng chớ đứng nơi cao thấp;

Ime dose vivajjetvā, ekamantaṃ ṭhitā ahu –

Avoiding these faults, they stood aside—

Those with weak leaders perish, those with bad leaders perish.
